Are Unity downloads suddenly taking FOREVER, or is it just me?
Last couple of times I’ve updated the wait has been insane. I’m currently installing Unity 2017.1.0p2 and it’s been going for about 3 hours so far. It seems to take like 30-60 seconds to download a MB.
I think the problem is on your end. The last couple times I’ve downloaded Unity (several in the last week) the download speeds have been pretty standard.
Do you know what I do in these instances? I log onto my shared hosting account on DreamHost, use wget to transfer the file from its original server to my hosting account, place it into a public location, and download it.
GitHub link to the underlying stuff. Seriously old now. I’ve changed ways to do web servers at least three times since, but it still works. The link extraction is probably of most use.
Yes, that’s the part many people have trouble with, including me while in some new place with guest wifi set to Stasi. Those direct links for individual packages generally work faster then, at the cost of a little annoyance (installing each one individually).
Oh, don’t worry, I caught your meaning. Mostly because I’ve seen you around the forums a billion times and you tend to come across that way in your posts generally.
More like a casual joker than that. I’ve encountered very few people on these forums I’d actually object to in person, and you’re definitely not one of them
What do you consider slow? I haven’t downloaded a 2017 version yet, but my normal DL time is around 20-30 minutes.
I consider that not bad, but I’m running a 15Mbit connection - so I don’t expect blazing fast downloads.
Just FYI to close this off, I ended up testing downloading of Unity 2017.1.0p3 with my VPN.
I’m in Sydney, Australia. Using my direct internet connection, I get the issue of about a 3 hour download time. Using a Sydney-based POP within the VPN, same thing (VERY slow). Using a US (California) based POP within the VPN, download takes about 20 minutes.
So… looks like maybe a CDN type issue? And that Unity doesn’t like Australians.
Yep. Same issue online gaming often has in Australia. You lot are always screwed when it comes to services
Auto-selection of servers is barely an afterthought for too many CDN companies.
You can dig a little with WHOIS info on the IP addresses it gives you and see which companies actually manage the lines, then compare with other downloads which don’t give you any reasonable speeds. I bet you’ll find a small list of repeat offenders
You should use a downloader to speed up your download.
Use direct-links instead and install manually.
I use this page https://getunity3d.com/ to get direct-links. it’s faster
