Unity Editor Crashes on launch, Mac OS Yosemite

Hello there, I have been having problems with Unity 5.0 recently, impossible to use or launch Unity 5.0.

  1. Here is what happens

I have an IOS application project created on Unity4.6 which works perfectly fine with Unity 4.6.

On trying to upgrade it for Unity 5.0 and then try it, Unity 5.0 crashes. Impossible to relaunch unity 5 by any other mean. Unity 5.0 gets stuck on a white screen. (see picture 2)

  1. What the hell did I do :
  • I made a back up of my project,

  • and then opened it and upgraded it for Unity 5.0. So far everything was fine.

  • I launched the project and open the VirtualScene, which consists of a plane with a webcam texture on it (see picture1).

  • Then I clicked on play button : blue screen on the webcam texture, Unity 5.0 crashes.

  • Try to relaunch Unity 5.0 : Impossible. White screen. Unity doesn’t answer.

  • Try to uninstall, reinstall.

  • Launch Unity 5.0 with no project and freshly installed, white screen again.

3°) other informations :

I am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on a MacBook Pro mid2012 2,5GHz i5 8Go ram
Unity 4.6 still works perfectly fine with the non upgraded back up of my project.
I have already tried restarting, re re downloading unity 5.0 and I have cleaned Library/Preference/Unity folder.

In the end if I can’t upgrade this particular project and use it on unity 5.0 it’s not a huge problem. But not being able to just open Unity 5.0 is a big and insane issue. I have other works coming soon and needing unity 5.0.

Thanks for the help, I will try to answer and give as many details as possible if needed !

Same problem. It is crazy just yesterday it worked fine and now it crashes… What changed?!

Well, I’m not using Unity 5 by the way, but I guess, that if you could open the project for first time and then it didn’t work anymore, I guess Unity 5 did a conversion to your project and now, strangely, something has been converted in a wrong way, or maybe an incompatible object.

Well I quite surely agree with you, but what I don’t understand is why I can’t open unity 5.0 with any other project or even a new project, after uninstalling and installing again unity 5

A small update if anyone is having this problem or if some genius wants to correct it, I still can’t use Unity 5 on my session. Same white screen.

But I created an other session on the same computer, so sharing apps and system libraries … And by a strange miracle it works on that new session. At first I thought it was an april fool, yet it is real. I can get to the Unity 5.0 launcher and create new projects.

regards

I’m having this same problem too and it’s frustrating. I went to a games convention yesterday and spoke to some developers who use unity and I was so excited to download unity and get stuck in with it and it keeps crashing before I can even open the editor :frowning:

using Unity 5.0.1f1 on Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

Erf good luck, I’ll post some news here if I ever get some answer from the support, so far I know only two way to have unity 5 work when this happen : trying on another user session on your computer. Or reinstalling yosemite and everything on your mac… desperate solution. Last option, using unity 4.6.

Hmm… sounds like Unity 5’s first run is corrupting settings. That’s all I can guess!

One more thing to try if one hasn’t upgraded yet; uninstall Unity 4.6 first before installing Unity 5.x! I once had a couple of issues with a windows machine behaving strangely after Unity was upgraded over a previous version, of which was later linked to file permissions being wrong. On top of that, for those who have already upgraded and suffered this weird fate, try the repair file permissions utility on your Mac and see if that fixes it. I am not a mac-user myself, so this is purely from reading about how Macs work, and likewise may be inaccurate. (Thank you APC magazine! :))

Little update for this post, Since last version (Unity 5.1.1f1) everything works fine again.
