Unity for PlayStation Vita: What is the likelihood this could happen soon, do you think? Would you be interested in developing for it?
Hmmmmm well, assuming the Vita will have access to the Playstation Store, and the fact that PS3 is already supported, I’d say it’s a possibility, but don’t expect it anytime soon.
Can’t the Vita play Playstation Suite content? Seems like that’d be a way to get Unity games on the Vita.
Only once Unity supports PlayStation Suite.
The Xperia Play is not PS Suite, its android and the games are not Vita compatible
PS Suite is coming to Xperia Play later. Vita will support PS Suite. When Unity can make PS Suite games, it seems like we’ll be able to get them on both devices.
Yes, when
But the question is if and when.
Also its nothing you will do with the normal licenses, thats likely going to be a console class license
Absolutely. By all means available to us.
I’m sure a different type of license would be required. But I imagine there will be two ways to approach the PlayStation Store. As a full title, or a “minis” equivalent. Both of which should be priced independently to encourage indie developers.
We didn’t get PSP or DS, I doubt we’ll get Vita
You didn’t get PSP or DS because you didn’t contact union or have any finished game or publisher behind you. I can say with clarity unity will never support the DS with its ridiculous 2k poly budget and other limitations but as far as I know they have PSP stuff working according to their blog. They have blackberry tablets working too and other stuff over on union.
Just because you don’t have it, doesn’t mean unity doesn’t support it or it isn’t working with union behind closed doors.
Serious piece of hardware right there, the thought of a quad core inside a portable gaming device shakes me ^^, as for developing games for it, I think that would probably happen once the license to develop games for ps3 will be released, I’m not even sure if you can right now or not, but I bet itll fall somewhere there.
i think it would be an interesting journey
You didn’t get PSP and DS cause neither of them could even load the runtime code and leaving enough RAM to load textures and sounds at all.
The DS has 4MB ram, thats not even enough for mono, without considering your code.
The PSP has 32mb RAM, which is still by far too little (in comparision: iphone2g / 3g which are extremely limited, have 60-70mb), as mono + your game code use up up to 16mb RAM, leaving you with 16mb for all textures, sounds etc. Thats not even worth targeting as the effort is extremely large yet most games would look very bad in comparision to other titles, not doing Unity any good.
the PSVita on the other hand is very likely to be supported sooner or later, because its hardware is capable of supporting Unity finally. The 3DS would do so too, although I doubt we will see support for it as its hardware is a total joke compared to any mobile and iOS device at the time, it can barely compete with the 3GS generation and that as a console which is normally meant to hold for 2-3 years … (I own one too, but not cause it impresses me in any form, games look as crap as on the DS already - will be my last nintendo mobile generation if they continue to ask for premium fees for trash hardware as the device isn’t worth more than $150-$200 at max, but its sold at $400 here in switzerland)
Well you guys should make consoles not watches
