I wonder if the Unity folks are thinking about PSPgo as a possible build target?
I wouldn’t count on it unless it becomes wildly popular… and so far a lot of people are not liking it.
The PSP has never done well, this one is exorbitantly priced, and the innards are five years old. Just wait until they come out with a successor that isn’t such a disgrace.
the pspgo is actuall 1.45* exorbitantly priced.
and its actually independent of the price that it can’t run on it.
The psp platform has so little RAM that unity after loading itself requires over 50% of the whole available memory for application, data and graphics
This subject has been covered at length in many other threads.
Summary - PSP is shit. Sony’s licensing is shit. Working with the PSP platform is shit. To really enjoy any performance with that platform you need to build a proprietary solution.
If you were smart, you’d prototype the title in Unity iPhone/PC and then rebuild the game yourself specifically for the PSP.
If writing your own game engine sounds way too hard, you shouldn’t be wondering about the PSP anyway ![]()
Bentley summed it up
“Why does shit happen always to us?..” ![]()
On the other side, I’m so spoiled by Unity, I’d like hit a button and get up and running with my own Mini PSPgo. I know that a lot of us skeptical, but it does have some potential as another indie market to make $$$ to pay mortgage…
yes it has potential but only for professionals who are experienced enough to create games within the constraints of 32mb of total memory for application, bin code and texture data, slow gpu and even slower cpu.
So commonly: no unity developers / .net devs as the cpu and memory constraints are a neck breaking constraint.
I wish only the next iPod touch have a kind of slide - off thing, pretty the same as the PSPgo, with all kind of pads, buttons and sticks.
Think about it, the iPod touch is almost twice flat as the iPhone 3GS. Adding this sort of slide thing off will not hurt the portability of the device.
If it comes out, remember I’ve had this idea for some time (i’m sure if you troll through forums you’ll find it)…
A sleeve you put your iphone/ipod into that has additional buttons ![]()
Such as shoulder buttons, etc.
Basically, an elaborate case that gives it gaming buttons.
Patent pending ![]()
There have been multiple mockups of this. Some rumors indicated designs would go into production with some major case manufacturers, but hasn’t happened yet.
There are even prototype videos in the wild: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ojLKeewbEk
Wow, let’s play 3D games with a Super Nintendo controller. :?
My ideas totally predate that ![]()
Yeah … I totally liked that band before they were popular. ![]()
Sorry. Had to say it ^^
That kind of thing would cetainly be pretty cool. The downside of it would be that there still is no standard, then. The worst case would be 3 or 4 of these things each with a different button-layout and -number.
Sort of like the Wii Virtual Console Setups. You’d have to offer the least common buttons for all of them.
Or create several controller setups (that sill need to work with the least-button hardware), at least.
I still like the general idea very much. ![]()
Some folks share opinion about Minis on Gamasutra
Downloadable game. No patches or upgrades.
Complete idiocy.
But, your game will not get lost in a 16k game pool.
They will be, less competition and the market it’s pretty big, considering the old and new PSP users.
According to the Gamasutra article, theres only one step for aproval process. Also, sony lowered the restrictions for Minis Devs.
Of course, we are talking about real devs, not spare-time homebrew programmers.
BTW, I dont think that a PSP port of Unity will get 50% of the hardware ressources.
If so, theres no reason to hire a programmer (look at the avaible jobs) to port the engine…
Honestly, I think it would be wiser to prototype the game [with unity], then rebuild it on the psp with a proprietary engine.
We’re not talking about rebuilding something like Unity from scratch, we’re talking about rebuilding only the utilized features… Its just going to produce faster, leaner code that way.
We’re all kind of spoiled with the power the iPhone has, but I assure you that a hand-crafted specialized engine is always faster than a ‘kinda does everything’ engine.
I don’t consider this beyond the capability of an independent developer, either.
If i got the ressources and money, for sure i will try a Mini licence. Even if my game is running 50% slower than any PSP retail game.

Well that’ll get a stunning metacritic score ![]()
And yes, there is a direct link between metacritic scores and sales.

What a helpful, supportive comment.
