Unity Freezes constantly on Windows 10

Hey there,

I am using Unity 5.5.1f1. I purchased a new desktop a few weeks ago and began seeing this bug which does not occur on any other device I own.

When I am using Unity and change to a different program, say MonoDevelop, and then go back to Unity, the loading wheel will rotate for a second and then stop. The entire editor is frozen, often times my mouse will not show within Unity (though works fine with everything else). I have to manually go into task manager and close the program. Happens pretty consistently such that I am closing and restarting Unity 10+ times an hour.

it is incredibly frustrating and a great detriment to my work flow.

I am on Windows 10 on a brand new i7 7700k processor. All other programs on my computer work fine, though I have only begun to notice this bug on my new computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

In my case a scene editor freezes when I move a couple of times, for instance, a cube in the scene. My laptop config. is also i7, Win 10. It has nvidia 1070. I tried with different versions of Unity, 5.6.x, 2017.3.x, 2017.2.x. Always the same. F*k, I have already spent some money on some tutorials on Udemy and Zenva academy about Unity. If I had had a slightest idea what a crap the software was… Did anybody from a dev team tried to run it on windows?

[update] I ran the unity after I disabled McAfee antivirus sw on my laptop. But again, after 2-3 min the scene editor stopped working.

What is happening when it appears to freeze? I run Unity on my Win 10 i7 laptop with weaker video than you have and have no issues. In the bottom right of the editor is it baking lightmaps when it appears to freeze?

If you have a very slow HDD and have Unity set to Auto Generate lightmaps on changes to the scene (the default setting last I checked), the editor can get really slow, bordering on unresponsive, as Unity gets blocked waiting for your HDD. In that case you should disable automatic lightmap baking and just bake manually, or upgrade to a modern SSD. Switching to manual mode can also help if the issue is the Unity process is hitting 100% CPU use while baking.

See “Auto/manual precompute” on this page of the manual
https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/UsingPrecomputedLighting.html

If it isn’t an issue while baking lightmaps, people will need more info from you as to what is going on in order to help.

Thank you Joe for all the info.

Btw, I should not have called Unity a crap. That piece of software is a result of great work of many people. Sorry for that. There are no applications without bugs.

I don’t think it is a matter of a disk since I do have SSD.
Actually I found an advise - I can’t remember the source - that apparently has solved my problem.
What you have to do is to remove your AnnotationManager files from a project library.
It is weird but it helps. Since that my Unity has never freezed again.
