The horrible truth : I had today in my e-mail a job ad for a junior web/java developer in banking. 37 canadian $ an hour, in a city where you can get a nice apartment for $600, or a 3 bedrooms townhouse for $1500.
For code does that not involve real time performance and vector maths …
Banking is big business and unlike games “everyone and their brother, sister, aunt, uncle, etc” don’t have dreams “to get a job in IT for Banking”. Not sure why though. I find all software dev is enjoyable or at least it can be made to be that way. Then you can spend some of your free time dabbling into game dev. Hard to beat that combo. Money to pay the bills, money for some extras and you can still work on games too.
Then it’s not your passion. I’d recommend you look into other industries.
I have no idea what you mean? Living costs and wages vary in regions, countries, and continents as explained above in great detail.
Then prepare for a lifelong struggle of debt. They key to life is discipline and control. If this is your attitude, you will always spend more than you can afford. Live a notch below your paycheck and enjoy financial freedom instead of locking all your money up in stupid shit like “bling”, huge houses, and sport cars.
Its like everything, there is a range depending on ability and experience (and also location). If you are good and experienced, you can make a lot. If you are just starting, you are going to be on the bottom of the range.
You dont really sit in my head and cant tell me what is my passion and what is not, if something isnt good enough ill leave it… (after some thoughts., i wouldnt leave programming and game dev, i love creating things and enjoy when someone appreaciate my work. Eventually i could go to software dev and ve an Indie developer)Your Point is bad. Look, games are my passion, but spending 8hours daily playing it and lets say boosting people in LoL or cs go gives me money, but not enough for me, so i left it… U get the idea?? And still i didnt get answer for my question…
Is it for real or a joke? That salary is 50-60$ per hour?
Eh maybe that ^ sounds rude. Im not so addicted yo spending, i Just like to spend… Means that i know how to Save if i really want something, i dont need bling bling everything, Just to let my future family live comfortable… Wearing good clothes, driving a sport car, having a normal house(not a penthause. ) with the 115k$ per year its even more than i need, but im Just asking. And keep in mind that im Just 17, i might tell different things as in immatured yet…
Oh and i meant i can live and work anywhere (where People speak the languages i know…) but id love to work in japan>USA>UK>others
Best bet is to look at one of the salary sites by your area (or area you want to work in), that will give you the best answer. They show an average rate by title and location. Asking individuals will give you skewed numbers because of sample size. I just checked a couple of salary sites and they were pretty darn close.
Then gaming isn’t your passion. Simply a hobby. If it were your passion you’d still be doing it, because you love it enough to take the risk.
Are you willing to give these things up? No? Then you don’t have the dedication needed to be successful in this field. To do this job professionally, you need total dedication to game development, not the salary. If you’re not, then you will never reach the level needed for the job nor be happy in the job for long. And that’s ok! There are plenty of alternatives! I used to work in game development but grew wary of it’s cutthroat environment and moved onto other fields. I didn’t have the dedication to the industry to justify the late nights and enormous stress involved. I doubt the money will keep you engaged either. Now I simply do this as a hobby and I love it; someday I may return professionally, but not now.
Edit: One day, you will learn that the salary may be the least important factor in a job. Find a job that offers good health care, has good people, and most importantly - offers an environment that you will enjoy.
Sport car is a fad, my favourite since i was child, Ford mustang supersnake ^_^, but good house and rest is mostly a must. What do you mean by cutthroat environment and enormous stress??
Is it a good job for someone for Who a family is very important? Or in other jobs i would face it too? Deadline thing
And " i doubt the money will keep you engaged either??? " what was that supposed to mean? " N1warhead" said Either50/60 USD an hour or a MINIMUM 400 USD a week Salary working the hours I want is what I do."
Doesnt it say that it makes a decent living? Im confused…
Edit. Is it fine now? Can you understand me?
Sorry to be rude, but can you please use at least conversational English? It’s a bit hard to understand your posts.
Yes, good money is involved if you are good. To be good, you need loads of experience and expertise. A starting level job is about whatever your median bachelors degree pulls in your region. But since you continue to focus and base your decisions off of salary, I don’t think you’re even taking my posts into account. Which again, is perfectly fine. To each their own path. Go for it - if the cash is enough to justify losing bits of your sanity, then awesome for you. If you don’t really love this field(and even if you do), the industry might not be for you if you’re not the right make. At this time in my life, my happiness and stress level is much more important than a game development career. I’ve since found something that I enjoy and still challenges me, yet is a much more secure and has a relaxed job market. It also allows me to continue game development as a hobby since it’s stress levels are much lower and leaves me with energy intact at the end of the day.
Edit: Don’t think that it’s just me trying to scare you off. Perhaps you think I’m biased against game development. @ has a lot of experience and has mentioned these negatives recently on these forums. In fact, there is an entire thread about why most people should leave the industry(take this as you wish, I do not want to instill my opinion on that matter).
i dont know about lose of sanity(loss of sanity reminds me one game, “amnesia”, its not that kind of loss right? ) but i guess you meant many deadlines and taking work to home? That depends where you work i think. Anyway thanks ill keep learning programming, and Focus on game dev now, in case i would change my mind i can always change industry, right? Programming is programming, its not so hard to become software developer or whoever from gamedeveloper? (correct me if im wrong)
I don’t think that turning your passion into your profession is a good idea. It is probably a bad idea. Because in case things get really tough or/and you’ll have to face some sort of disappointment, it will hit you very hard.
I think going “cold-blooded professional” route is a better choice. As in, “you’re doing something you’re good at, you get paid for it, and you don’t hate it”.
I applied for a few Unity jobs, didn’t get them. So just had to become an indie game dev instead. :)/
I’d have more money if I had a “proper” job. :(. But… there’s more to life than money. :)/
