Unity games and AMD 6900 Series

Hello,

So I’ve been playing games lately and noticing a huge increase in heat and fan noise from my graphics cards, now this only happens in certain games so being the inquisitive type I started to look into it. I’ve discovered it only happens in Unity engine games. While these cards are old no doubt two of them in crossfire have been running every new title up to now with ease and at a graphic fidelity and framerate I’m happy with.

City Skylines - Game starts fine and after a few minutes starts to ramp up the heat and fan noise to almost unbearable levels. This is in an EMPTY map with no buildings also graphic settings seem to make little to no difference to this.

Pillars of Eternity - No problems 99% of the time however when i cast line based AOE like Wall of fire or Wall of force massive increase in heat and fan noise.

Kerbal - Again mostly runs fine, heat up mainly happens over water from what I can tell only playing this 1 day.

My drivers are up to date using the betas actually, my system is clean no dust, my cards are fine there are no BSODs, errors. This only happens in Unity games. Lets be honest these games graphically should not be demanding at all in comparison to Shadow of Mordor, DA : Inquisition, BF 4 etc.

Well, others could argue that making graphics cards work at 100% is actually important when you’re aiming for the maximum frame rate :).

Anyway, I’d suggest downloading something like MSI afterburner, which will tell you exact GPU usage, their temperatures, etc. It will also show framerate, and in case it is higher than your monitor’s refresh rate, you could enable VSync to limit FPS, which will reduce GPU usage as well.
