Unity indirectly criticised by spaceport.

Before I say anything, I just want to say that I’m not starting a flame war.

Spaceport Neo

I’m curious on what everyone thinks about Spaceport NEO and their decision to go both 2D and 3D. It also looks like they are criticizing Unity for no instant updates. It could be the way I’m reading it.

“No instant updates and UNITY’s 3D engine is proprietary: NEO is WebGL based.”

lol Like ‘proprietary’ doesn’t also describe their engine. And every engine. They both use freely available SDKs in the end, and they both have proprietary stuff on top of that.

As for the updates thing… That’s actually pretty cool. They actually have a feature there that Unity doesn’t have. Not that it needs it, but still, it’s nice. And definitely handy while testing.

Edit: Blah, “coming soon”. Code or GTFO! All the claims in the world don’t mean jack if it’s too hard to deal with the code.

Competitors are going to try and make their engine look better than others by weakening the opposing, whether they does this lightly or strongly is their own means. Just like how Apple compared there tablet to an android tablet in their keynote, nothing wrong with it in my opinion.

Looks interesting, like to see how their API’s work.

A lot bold statements but no real infos so far.

They’ve since removed the Unity critical material, it seems.

Unity is here now , NEO isn’t here sometime in the future .
Neo relays on Maya to actually build something , which means you spend 3K for something you may not need .

Unity > NEO

Free?! Yeah right… For a while.
Paying every month to push updates? No, thanks.

I emailed them because at first it sounded like they were advertising something new for flash. They confirmed it and said they will not support Stage 3D and I immediately lost interest right there…

It worries me that people would actually not use a product because it is WebGL not flash.

How is that worrisome? It’s just personal preference more than anything.

The neo website is kind of bad really… way not enough information, bad english, seems like hot air promises without enough to back it up. Not a threat to Unity at all based on this.

But if there investors listing is correct, they have some serious cash to work with. Those were some big names, especially Nickelodeon.

True, but if they aren’t delivering then that serious cash isn’t really going to matter.

I have some doubts that this is true.

BBC Worldwide is also listed twice…

The whole site looks dodgy. No imprint, no FAQ, no Disclaimer, nothing. Just some statements and low res pictures.

I have trouble with the 10x claims repeated constantly on their page. Logic dictates that it’s bullshit. How do you measure 10x? Do you throw dice in the air? does it support 10 platforms? In which case I’d probably believe them. Only it doesn’t. So I don’t like false claims. I don’t care for free because mostly, to be brutally honest, free usually means “no support”.

And I’d rather not subscribe and pay just for iAP.

Whoever thinks he’s a marketing genius over there needs to think about a new job.

If I didn’t know what the Maya interface looked like, I’d think that screenshot of Maya was the Neo UI.

It doesn’t seem to support any standalone builds though?

And free? I smell a rat… nothing is free…

In fact, there are only 2 investors: BBC Worldwide and Youweb Incubator. The rest are customers.

I wonder if spaceport will post in here? rofl!
