Unity iPhone trial wiped out my Unity Pro license

I just installed the Unity iPhone trial and it seems to have reverted my Unity Pro install to just plain vanilla Unity. I managed to re-activate Pro, but not before it gutted the versioned metadata from one of my big projects. But hey, that’s what source control is for.

Is there something I might have done to have caused this? Any way to prevent it in the future? Also, has activating twice on the same machine used up both of my activation tokens, or is Unity’s copy protection system savvy enough to know that this is still the same computer?

Hi!

What you report is completely normal. Our iPhone product is an upgrade option to a Unity or Pro base product. When you activated your iPhone trial it came with a free Unity. The activation clobbered your real Pro license.

Our license server should be able to tell that you have re-activated on the same machine. This will not count as two activations.

Thanks,
Graham

So, maybe this is a dead thread by now, but what is the correct path to evaluate Unity iPhone when you already have a Unity Pro license? I did the same and then reactivated my pro version, but I still have the issue of the iPhone version asking me to activate when I launch it (but don’t what to because it will kill my pro license).

you can not have both active at a time. either its your pro or the iphone trial+ Unity (when you buy unity iphone your old key is disabled and you get an all new one for pro + iphone basic/advanced)

Hmmm. We’ll I guess I’ll have to wait until I have a free machine to do the eval. The dependency seems odd though.

No not really.
Unity iPhone is an addon to unity, no distinct product.
Until Unity Indie was replaced with Unity you had to buy Unity Indie first and then buy the Unity iPhone addon.

If you want Unity iPhone Advanced, you have to own Unity Pro to buy this addon as it is an addon to unity pro only

But these are all just dependencies base on licensing, as far as I can tell the iPhone editor stands by itself just fine, so it seems like I should be able to eval it independent of unity pro.

It does so at the time, but only because Unity iPhone was branched out of the 2.1 editor (it happened in the same time as the work on 2.5 and the all new editor). The longer term target is to get them into one environment again through the “ubbermerge”

Even being an own editor, you can only have 1 unity license installed on the system at a time and license wise you would technically not even be allowed to trial unity through the unity free trial functionality as it gives you a unity free + iphone basic trial. But as a single entity you are license wise not allowed to own Unity and Unity Pro at the same time  (the licensing system is just pretty generous, not locking out users that are clearly violating the EULA)

What you can do is what people actually did before the 2.6 release with all the automatism: request a specific trial license in conjunction to your key.

But I personally would just do what I did during the eval phases: 2 new folders into the pace folder, copy the unity iphone trial into one, the normal pro into the other and copy the one into the pace folder you need at a time. As you can’t work in both at the same time, there won’t be any collisions
