Unity iphone vs. unity mac importing .fbx file, jagged resul

I’m getting a jagged result in Unity iPhone vs. Unity Mac when importing a .fbx file (see the screen shots below). I’m guessing that the iPhone version is not importing the normals (which were smoothed in 3ds max).

The manual says there are import settings but I can’t find them. Is this a bug, or what am I missing?

The import settings are now in the Inspector panel. Set Calculate Normals and the Smoothing Angle slider should appear. Change the smoothing angle until you get the desired result.

OK thanks. That was easy to find. Its not a slider though but that would be nice especially if you got a preview as you slide it (just a thought). I have 1.5.0f3, is there a later release I should be using during my trial?

So that setting was on by default and the angle was 60. I changed it, experimenting until about 120 seemed give the best results. Still not as good as the Mac rendering so I’m wondering why?

It appears that your smoothing groups are not correctly exporting or being imported. Typically software is set to around 60 degrees… 120 degrees is MORE than a right angle, where you would normally want something to facet like your example there

I take it back, once I tried the exact same thing by bringing the iPhone project into the Mac Unity (had a problem related to that). The Mac version does have the slider, nice. The result was identical.

Its down to the model needing more polys or just living with it (small screen and all, probably OK, that’s why its low poly to begin with).

The problem I mentioned with opening the iPhone project is that Unity Mac warns that the project is older… if you heed this warning and Quit, then you are stuck. Upon launching Unity again, it presents the same warnings and you can’t get out of that without going ahead with the conversion.

Good point JT. Some foggy part of my brain said I shouldn’t be going past 90, but I did anyway.
