Unity is amazingly cheap, is there ever sales or discounts?

Unity is extremely cheap for what it is, but trying to convince my wife that $1500 + is an investment is still hard to do. I do game development firstly as a hobby but am getting to a point in my projects that I require pro. So I am wondering if there is ever any discounts or sales. I saw once that there was a preferred costumer discount but never saw anything else on it.

Kick your wife in the jaw and buy

Your stuff looks good, you should get pro

But its rare that there are sales… I’ve only ever seen one and that was for basic.

So if basic had a discount did they give us money? Jeez I sure missed out.

Basic != Free.

Make money, and present a business plan :stuck_out_tongue:

Educated in Math Education?

If you’re either a teacher or a student theres a chance you could get the educational version [there’s a commercial and non-commercial option.]

With that attitude, hopefully you won’t get married.

Keep in mind that $1500 to $4500 is just the entry level…
Eventually you end up spending much more than that in assets and utilities (unless you want to waste 8+ years making a single average game).

  1. Download Unity free version
  2. Make stuff
  3. Sell it in the asset store
  4. Set aside money made in asset store for Unity Pro

You will learn Unity and have zero upfront costs (aside from your time). Bonus points from wife if you buy her new shoes or stuff for the kids with the money you make every month.

Good ideas all… well except kicking my wife in the jaw. That one is a bad idea for several reasons, for starters she would just upper cut me through our ceiling. You know, mortal combat style.

I actually am selling some stuff on the asset store, and it looks like that might have to be the way to go. Slow but steady wins the race.

LOL.

They occasionally have sales. I upgraded to Pro last time they had a 20% off sale, saved $300. However I have no clue when/if they will do one again.

Its not, if it your hobby, don’t present it like 1500$ right now, but instead over 6 months , 250$ or so each month .

You can really get alot done with free.

IMO never buy pro until your actively making money off unity( or you at least have a solid plan to recoup your 1500$

Lol, exactly! Do what politicians do… Ask for small budgets for various things she can’t possibly verify. Like, say your car broke mid-town and you’ll be taking it to the mechanic (even though that never happened) and keep that money; for new years fireworks? use half the money, and keep the rest!.. keep it up for five or six months you will be able to buy unity pro, and maybe buy her something nice as backup plan in case she finds out! And we all know she will, only she’ll think you were having an affair with a younger lady, and going to be relieved when she finds out you’re just a super nerd! But then she’ll get mad because you lied to her… and BAM! Diamond earrings!
Everybody wins!

Hey redcap, I found your pants if you want them back. Your wife was wearing them :p.

Basing relationship on repeated lies to acquire a license to a fairly cheap game engine?

I’d like to pretend people had more sense than that…

:frowning:

I’m pretty sure there are occasionally discounts. Back in March-April there was a $400 discount on all licenses. Also, Unity has offered 30% off pro for Ludum Dare contestants. Just keep your eyes out.

This thread is cracking me up. 20% is about the OP. 10% is just random thoughts that I don’t know what to make of, and 70% is ways to deceive ones spouse. Who would have thought that the Unity community had such a shady underbelly.

If your trying to get unity pro without cash upfont there are a few ways you can go about it.

One way is to make a small simple game or other such unity project in the unity free version that people enjoy and put it on the net with advertisements when it loads and get the cash doing that, if it is good enough sell it cheap.

You can make assets and sell them to the unity community.

You can also find a team to join and hopefully they would have a unity pro license that your game can be complied with and hopefully the cash made by the team gets everyone there own copy of unity pro and then further cash.

Unity does specials sometimes I got a free copy of the Android 3.x and IOS 3.x license when they where giving them away months ago as a special got lucky that day I saw the advertisement for it  keep an eye out for them when they come out.

There’s an even simpler way. Use a credit card, and pay it off over time.

I think the problem is that it will still come out of his and as such his family’s finances and even over time its still the same money gone and his wife wonders if it will be a good investment, all the other ways are investment free other than his time.
