Unity just crashed when trying to build .apk file and could not re-open scene. Works now but worried

(Had no idea what forum to post this in (androd, VR, general support) so if its in the wrong place please feel free to move it to correct place.)

Ok. So I have a backup of my Unity project (backed it up this morning). And my project that crashed just now, I was able to re-open it. I just had to re-start my pc for some reason (phew). But nonetheless I was not able to open it again for some reason.

I was building my project for Android, so building the .apk file basically. I forgot to plug the phone in my PC when it was building (as I forget many times), and so I plugged my phone in half way through the build. There was no message (like it usually shows) saying that ‘it has not detected phone, please plug back in’ (probably because the build had not got to that stage yet). So once phone was plugged back in, Unity build freezes.

Nothing happend for a few minutes so I decided to kill it via Task Manager. I then recieved the Unity bug reporter. I clicked send and it loaded its percentage bar, then an error message appeared. So I couldn’t send the report. Luckily I took a print screen of it before I restarted my PC. As I couldn’t send the crash report, I couldnt re-open the Unity save, and Chrome was not opening I thought it was my PC for a second. I then restarted PC and Unity project opens and plays and builds fine.

-Why on earth did this happen? Becuase I plugged my phone in half way through the build?
-Why couldnt I send the crash report and what does it mean anyway from the image?
-I really want to backup my whole project now. What I do usually for backing up is I copy and paste the whole project in 2 places; my hard drive that I use for University, and another folder on my desktop. So that will overide those current projects (obviously). But, what if the project that crashed has some sort of bug in the files? I dont want to override my other projects that are the backups and they crash also and I cant get it working.

Hopefully someone can be of help

Thanks, I dont want another crash, deadline for final University project is this Friday!

well, at least its good time to start using version control, like
github, bitbucket…

i havent had crashes if plug android phone while building or too late etc…

hmm. So its a place where you can store Unity projects? I work alone with my projects atm, still at University and all so its useful for me? Even though I mentioned I have backups already?

definitely useful always, you can compare changes, can go back to older version,
its saved on the cloud (so local hd failure wont cause issues etc).

bitbucket has free private repositories (public repository would be visible for everyone one),
github has student pack with private repos Sign in to GitHub · GitHub
