Unity Launcher (tool)

Hey guys, this is a cool little tool I’ve built to launch multiple versions of unity. It’s finally gotten to what I consider finished, and I’ve finally gotten around to uploading it. There’s a link to the most current version here: http://calibermengsk.com/launcher.html

It does connect to the web to check for a newer version, as well as to open the ad (yes, there’s a banner ad like webpages have. Sorry if you don’t like it, but it’s non-intrusive. If you’d like to support the app though, please click on the ad every once in a while. It doesn’t even pop up a new window, it stays inside of the program.)

It seems like it’s a simple program, but it is extremely useful if you want multiple versions of unity, and don’t want to mix up what version of unity that project used. This time around it saves everything to the registry, so you don’t even have to extract it from the zip file if you don’t want to.

You can also change the graphics library (opengl, dx9, dx11) and the build target (lots of them) simply by changing the pulldown. This is remembered for each individual project, so have fun!

Hope this makes some people happy! Oh, and if you have any comments or suggestions, please PM me so I get an email about it. Thanks!

EDIT:
I should also mention, I tried to get the first version (that saved everything into a text file) on to the asset store, but sadly they don’t allow external applications to be uploaded there. That’s fully understandable, but this is also not an application that can run from inside of unity, so alas, it’s stuck here on the forum. T_T

Pretty cool! Thanks for sharing,

I hope you are aware that Unity 5 will bring out its own new launcher though. I’m not sure if actually lets you choose different Unity version likes yours does, but I’ve seen it a Unity Roadshow demo, and it is very pretty

Nope, I was not aware. If it makes mine obsolete, then so be it. The better for everyone in the long run. I won’t be hurt by it, but as you stated, mine will support multiple versions still, and I doubt the new one will support at least older versions. At some point I intend to add the option of running multiple different platform builds as well, just being a few checkboxes and an ok button, and I doubt they’ll have that in there as well. Won’t know until it’s out though.

Just a heads up, asking people to click on your ads might be against your ad services EULA. That said, I’m totally down to click on it for you haha.

This is an awesome tool, thanks a lot! This is one area where Unity falls short, and your tool really helps when you have old projects to work in. Awesome stuff!

Hmm… did not realize that was against the rules. (I signed up for adsense a very very very long time ago, so it probably wasn’t a thing when I signed up. I know I should have kept up on the tos, but they were changing it almost weekly for a while, and I didn’t have the time to read 30-40 pages of legal talk every week when it’s largely the exact same stuff.)

I’ll take the request to click on ads out on the next version and just hope they don’t shut me down for it.

I’ve been using your Launcher for a while and works great!

Two things that could be improven:

  • Move a project to any other Untiy version.
  • Order any of list panel’s elemenst (in version / projects) so you can re-order them the way you like.

Didn’t say it here, but the new version is waiting to be accepted in the asset store. (both a free ad supported one, and a $2 no ad one. I’d have made it just $1, but the asset store doesn’t allow that. I guess it costs to much per transaction for unity to be happy with that.)
