Unity looks "more ugly" than Unreal Engine ... How to solve this ?

Hey there !

A few days ago i played an great and funny old 3D game from 2005. Because the effects are very bad and also the graphics are awefull, i decided to remake this game in an modern engine. So i started up unity and made an FPS camera with some basic animations and an “Playground” Scene with some basic white cubes and stuff like that. I used some high detailed Modern Weapons from the asset store for my FPS cam and some standard FPS hands and arms. But soon i noticed that the graphics in total are looking way more ugly than in unreal engine. They arent looking more pixelated or washed… they are just more dark and not so “Colerfull” no reflections and stuff like that. I also important an speedtree and placed it in my Scene… The tree doesnt look so nice and the shadows arent very smooth too… and i already changed alot in the settings. So im currently thinking about switching to Unreal because it gives me the felling that its more colerfull and just more beautifull than unity…

Is there anyway to make unity graphics look more like unreal engine ?

It’s not the engine - sorry to say - it’s you. You should do some research and look into the basics of the engine in the learn section to understand what settings you should add/change to improve the look.

Changing a lot of settings means nothing if you don’t know what you are changing and why you are changing them.

Jumping to Unreal isn’t going to solve the issues you face. Well it might solve the issue of you want the system to make it look good for you. But as soon as you get a little farther along - unless you are prepared to research and learn what changes performed cause what effect - you will eventually find Unreal doesn’t ‘work’ either. Unreal looks better because it has a lot of ‘stuff’ turned on by default. Unity expects the developer to turn ‘stuff’ on if they want or need that ‘stuff’.

Wellcome. Yes, Unity is an empty box you can put what you need. And can do all you need. There is another side more important. Is simple to use, to script and make game development. And this is very important. I try CryEngine, UDK and Unreal and looks nice out of the box if you are a beginner. Also are more optimise. But for scripting, you need to be a pro. Try to make scripting coding and add more effects. Unity has a nice rendering, (look Adam demo) you need to put all the visual elements that you want to add: The sun shaft, the reflection, the effects…the There are a lot more options because of the asset store and always improving. But by default, there are also a lot of free options. Go to the asset store and download Unity content and look how they are. Unity is simple to use and powerful. Don’t give up. look the learning videos first. All of them. Then make the game and then think about visual.

also add reflection probes to get extra shininess on materials

Alright, thanks guys

Start by adding the post effects component into the camera.

In the section, Unity3D > Learn > Tutorials you will find a solution to all this kind of problems.
In particular, in the graphs section look at this video about Post Process image effects [link]

You are right on the button! It’s all about the user, It scales when your skills scale. This is the in_game render I did to prove this very point. It took me like 30mins to set up and tweak, to get the look and feel I wanted…
All I used was the Post processing pack made by unity and the Blacksmith Hair-shader also by unity.3775246--315589--unity render.PNG

Locked cos it’s clearly not an ugly engine in the slightest. Perhaps it used to be. If people are having problems making things look nice, feel free to post specific threads about it (after researching book of the dead).
