Unity on a MacBook Pro 13 inch 2.4Ghz

Hi all,

I need to purchase 10 new Laptops for my Game Training classes as the iBooks I’m currently using are having trouble coping with the Unity projects we are currently working on.

Just wondering if anyone has had experience running Unity on the current model MacBook Pro 13 inch 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo - 4gm Ram - NVIDIA GeForce 320M

Alternatively does anyone think that I could strip down these iBook G4s to the point where they could do the job? Maybe removing system components such as spotlight, bluetooth, networking etc I’ve got 12 of them and it would be great to use them if I can optimise them enough.

Cheers

Jeff

I use Unity on my Current Gen 13" Macbook Pro exclusively, and love it. Unity 3 features such as Beast and Umbra are quick enough that it doesn’t slow me down, and I usually have Unity, Cheetah, Photoshop, Textmate, Chrome, and a few other applications open at the same time without performance hits. Let me know if you have any specific questions or use cases, as I will be glad to test anything out.

That’s wonderful feedback!

Many thanks Jacob

Cheers

Jeff

I run Unity, Photoshop, and Textmate on my last-gen MBP 15" with no problems. If you have the money and the stones for it, MBP’s are great. If not… well, there are some decent and affordable windows laptops that will run Unity just fine.

I run it on a 3 year old 13 inch white plastic MacBook 2Ghz (not even a mac book pro), with 2 gigs of ram, and I have zero issues! In addition, I run Photoshop CS5, Modo, Maya, Silo, and ZBrush 4 (not all at once).

I would HIGHLY suggest you get SMC Fan Control though, or you will burn up your machine.

I’m running on a current-gen MBP 15 (without any upgrades) with Unity, Monodevelop, Chrome, Versions, Photohop, Pandora (I mention it because it’s a bit of a resource hog on mac still),iCal, Mail, and a few other random apps open all the time.

No hiccups at all really, aside from project-related things (like our 2000 draw calls in some scenes ).

The only thing I’m not happy about is Monodevelop; it’s rubbish compared to Visual Studios still (our project is in C#). I can live without the features, but the application performance is pretty awful in files with dense text for some reason.

Hey,
I’m thinking of buying a MBP 13 too, but I’m used to working with a 27 Imac, so I would like to know, is it comfortable working with graphic software like maya and unity on a 13" display, or should I buy a monitor with it?

13" is possible, but not very good. an external monitor is cheap ie samsung, and you get dual display then

Thanks, I’ll look for a cheap monitor in my local electronics store

Remember to get a displayPort / thunderbolt adapter for whatever cable you plan on using.

I’d suggest HDMI with a HDMI to displayport / thunderbolt adapter, easiest solution.

And to the OP, I’m currently using the exact same specs on my machine that you inquired about, and I also am running without a hitch.

i work exclusively on a 13 inches mac book pro early the most basic model, and it works great
