As far as i understand from the asset store eula, anything sold on there is bound to a specific license. And anything distributed through there freely is bound to the same licence UNLESS it specifies otherwise. Is this correct?
Am i to understand then, that i can use these assets in a commercial game, for example?
Bear in mind that Unity assets are very recognisable. Although you can legally uses them in your games, you’re likely to get reviews that say you’ve stolen assets, or are not experienced enough to create assets.
Well I don’t know that I’d worry to much about reviews. I read some yesterday for a obscure game and it was totally unbalanced. All 5 stars or all 1 stars and the 1 stars used nasty language. I know it should not but the nasty reviews almost make me buy or download the game. If you’re going to be bored, be nice about it.
and certainly, some of them are very recogniseable, such as the Ethan character. But many of the other things in that tutorial are fairly generic, like walls, barrels and maybe even the computer terminals. i think i shall use them, sparingly, mixed in with a great deal of custom things, too.
If I may ask, by what mechanism is this restricted?
The Asset Store EULA says:
2.2 Licensor grants to the END-USER a non-exclusive, worldwide, and perpetual license to the Asset to integrate Assets only as incorporated and embedded components of electronic games and interactive media and distribute such electronic game and interactive media.
Unless I’m missing something that grants a license to make games with the Asset. I can’t see a restriction on tooling.
So, have been speaking with the legal team, and, as you say, there isn’t anything in the EULA that prevents models/textures from being used outside of Unity. So turns out I was mistaken.
