I think I remember Nicholas saying something along the line that the people on the forum are only the “tip of the iceberg”. However, he was referring to the people being active on the forums (or more precisely the people posting “me too” on the Wishlist). Now that’s a figure not that easy to find out (um… SELECT * FROM forumUsers ORDER BY postingCount DESC ).
So, I guess it’s kind of hard to assume anything about the Unity user base from the forums. There’s people who have registered for the forums but don’t own Unity, and there may be people who have Unity but don’t want to get involved in the forums (some may prefer paid support)…
That’s exactly what memberlist provides (sort by posts, descending). Looks like there are two users with posts wrapped around zero, or something
Yeah, it’s a question of what constitutes a “user base”… for example, if some school has a couple dozen licenses, how many users does that add to the userbase?
I would say that means there’s around 500 users somewhat active in the forums (“somewhat active” I just defined by “around 10 postings”).
Still, I’m not sure this says much about how many people are actually active users of Unity. I can hardly imagine anybody who ever installed Unity ever stopping using it, but I’ve heard there’s weird things happening in the world, sometimes
Ah, would I like to sit at that database where I can do “SELECT count(*) FROM activations”
But one thing I do know: There seem to be a lot of people jumping on the Unity train. Just recently a friend called me and asked if I was interested in helping out another friend who was just starting up with Unity, and last week, I met a cool company that’s also currently starting its first projects with Unity … Actually, it might even already be time to start a little “Unity Users Group - Munich”
