Unity vs CryEngine - ultimate Island Demo ;)

I have created a new Ultimate Island Demo for Unity (WIP) and I want here post one of the first screenshots.

new features:

  • 3D Clouds
  • realistic water effects
  • realistic underwater effects
  • smooth ocean horizon
  • fish in the water
  • falling leaves particles in forest
  • windy leaves (surface animated)

If it is finished I will then upload a webplayer version.

This is a really good idea, we need a new Island demo, can you make an indie version also and upload them

Looks great, only thing I would change is place the player model a little bit closer and a bit lower or change the FOV because now it looks a like the camera is far away the guns nozzle.

NVM keep up the goodwork!

I agree with SimonAlkemade about the FOV, it’s a little extreme - looks like FarCry when you go into monster mode right now

This really does look incredible. Can’t wait to see more - keep up the fantastic work!

Wow! looks like really high quality. Something like this was needed to show what can be produced with unity if in the hands of skilled artist. Can’t wait to to a stroll around the beach

Don’t forget to add gamma correction.

Just p***ed my pants. Thanks for nothing.

Yeay!!

That looks awesome!!
The crysis screenshot is a bit better though :?

Although I think that you should add a contrast image effect (there is one right?), that would make it look better I think.

And of some reason I think the weapon looks a bit plastic.

Awesome pimped islands, great work!

maybe remove the gun all together (or even make your own physics gun and make it a bit of a sandbox island to show off physics n stuff)

Yes, but will it run on my computer? :stuck_out_tongue: Crysis certainly won’t.

It’s amazing. :o
Some minor changes that might improve it:

  • Textures on the terrain: instead of transferring straight between sand and grass, there should probably be some dirt in between. The same goes for the rocks and cliffs.
-You could make the trees more hi-res at the cost of some performance.
-Contrast could be upped for more effect, especially with shadows.
-Some lowpoly rocks could add interest to the terrain.
  • Have you seen Nikko’s realistic water shader? With a few alterations to improve performance, you might be able to put it in this leve.

Sorry if that was a lot of nitpicks; this project looks really cool. It would be awesome if Unity could finally beat Crysis, something that seemed impossible a while ago but now doesn’t look too far away.

If you look at the water carefully and read the first post it appears he’s already included Nikko’s ocean water shader (or one similar to it).

I can’t find Nikko’s shader anywhere. The last video on his site has been deleted.

The first thing that threw me off was the guy’s arm. It looks funny. Try making it look a bit more muscular. I am sure that if a person were carrying that heavy looking weapon all around the jungle, that person would be pretty well built. Also, it just helps with the immersion and fantasy aspect. Nobody fantasizes about being a scrawny jungle Rambo, they want to be built.

Also, I believe you are overdoing the distance blur. Tone it down a bit.

Now for the good; that is one awesome project you got going there. I really like the quality of everything, looks very well done. All of the effects combined really add to the overall visual appeal. The weapon also looks really interesting, good job there. With a few more detailed objects for the terrain, I think you will have something great!

This type of project shows that you do not really need to use the UDK engine or anything like that to achieve good graphics. It really comes down to the artist using the tool and what he can do. I am sure that if you had a few other people working on this project, you could easily get more world objects laying around that would really add to the general scene and make it come close to Triple AAA titles.

It looks really great! I agree with a previous poster that the arm might look better with a FOV change.

It looks like the 3DRT firearms pack - which I thought looked a bit funny too. Kinda like someone finished paintballing or riding a BMX then got teleported in to a high tech warzone.

This island level looks fantastic though. Agree with a lot of the comments but it’s really just icing on a tasty looking cake

@Alvarus

lol

@Alric

I thought he did that himself… now I feel stupid.

How do you make the terrain? Heightmap??

Nice
