What are the prospects of Unity Web player running on the iPhone? Obviously, it would require Apple’s cooperation since clearly you can’t just install plugins willy-nilly…
Anyhoo, it does fit in with some of my more interesting ideas for hybrid MMOGs that can be played with different clients on different platforms.
This has been talked about in a few other threads and I don’t want to rehash it yet again. Here is a short answer for now: we have to wait and see what happens with respect to the iPhone being opened up by Apple, from there we can then look to get our player on that device but it will likely require a TON of work to make it happen (phone/device manufacturers are very_strict about product testing, crashes and security bugs are simply intolerable in all forms, thus any submission, review and approval process is likely going to be long).
So, the prospects are slim pending further information from Apple. Was we have that information the prospects may or may not open up… We’re certainly interested, but are also in a bit of a holding pattern for now.
Doesn’t sound like it will happen this soon after they’ve said how they think of that people should develop content for the iPhone as well as even flash is not on board (whatever the reason might be behind this).
You know, Quicktime itself supports Flash 5 playback. I wonder if the iPhone doesn’t even have a full QT implementation and just has an MP4/H.264 playback thingy. Guess we’ll know in a couple of weeks.
Since there’s no developer SDK, and likely won’t be for some time - if ever - I imagine that it would be incredibly difficult to get a webplayer plugin developed.
They’ll have to do it after some time as it’s available for other phones as well and i dunno but i guess it feels quite incomplete and strange surfing today without flash support. I think it’s more a typical they couldn’t get it all done just in time and you’ll have to wait for v2 or an update.
All of which means nothing for development of the Unity plugin.
Don’t get me wrong, having th full Safari engine in a phone is impressive, but Apple’s pretending that this is how you create iPhone apps is a joke and an insult. Games are basically impossible.
