Unity Web Player does't work in desktop IE11 running Windows 8.1

Well… Pluging is installed and actually works if page creates it statically via tag. But web player support via UnityObject.js or UnityObject2.js is broken somehow.

So even Unity Real-Time Development Platform | 3D, 2D, VR & AR Engine page reports “Unity Plugin version: not installed” while it is actually here.

Yes, the webplayer currently doesnt run in IE11. A fix is being made at the moment and will be available with a future version of unity.
You can use a different browser on 8.1 though until we fix it.
