Why is there no support for linux?
Because it hasn’t been implemented yet and Linux is fairly niche. It might be added in the future though.
Thank you for you response. I think that statement was true a few years back, but linux has been growing its user base substantially in the last few years. Just take a look at the Indie Gaming Bundles that were released for the PC, MAC, and Linux groups. The number one purchasers of the games were linux users, not windows or mac. I really do hope that Unity Web Player is supported, as I see alot of potential with it.
We’re talking with our customer-base about what their business models are and how Linux factors into their needs.
are we still looking at the not too distant future?
Is there a linux version of the unity web player?
Despite publication in Unity 3D blog and mentiones in FAQ, looks like there is still no Linux version of player.
I suggest just telling “No, we have no plans to support Linux” instead of either promising or referring to unknown future.
Unity Technologies do not provide a Unity Web Player for Linux browsers. I also haven’t heard any plans on doing so.
Workaround:
Previously Linux users tried to install Windows versions of internet browsers to run the Unity Web Player using Wine.
The Pipelight project has made a plugin for native Linux browsers. It still uses Wine, but at least you won’t deal with Windows versions of internet browsers. See the community set up wiki page - http://wiki.unity3d.com/index.php/Running_Unity_Web_Player_on_Linux_using_Pipelight
