Unity will not start after clicking project---have tried everything that has previously worked...

I’ve run into this situation a few times before but have not figured out anything that will work this time. This seemingly happens out of the blue for no apparent reason. One day it will work fine and then the next day it won’t open at all anymore—well, to be fair it opens the main screen, allows me to choose a project and then goes into compiling scripts and runs in an endless background loop that you can’t kill in the task manager and does nothing.

I have tried deleting the Unity folders from Local and LocalLow directories in the AppData folder. I have tried deleting the Temp Directory from the project I am trying to open. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Unity. I have made Unity is allowed in my firewall/anti-virus programs and have even turned them off and closed them. I unistalled any anti-malware software.

The only way I have found around this is to load Windows 10 up in Safe Mode and then it loads just fine. But this is not ideal. I shouldn’t have to restart windows and load in safe mode for this program to actually work.

Enough people need to start letting Unity know these type of ridiculous flaws are unacceptable:

  • It’s unacceptable to cause people to have to spend days of their life trying to figure out why Unity suddenly and capriciously decides to stop working instead of spending time working on their projects.
  • It’s unacceptable for it to be working fine one day and then not the next when no other program I have has any issues running properly in the same time period.
  • It’s unacceptable for constant upgrades to basically invalidate previous versions of Unity to the point where you are stuck using whatever version you are using when you start the project along with the bugs and missing features available in current versions. Could you imagine if other programs were like this? Visual Studio? Every time they released a new version, they wouldn’t guarantee your code would work with the new version?? Popular games? Everytime they update to a new version none of your save games would work?? It’s completely preposterous in this day and age for that to be acceptable as Unity would like us to believe.
  • It’s unacceptable for these issues to be swept under the rug like they are unimportant or “normal”. They are not.

It’s unacceptable that you haven’t gotten sick enough of this to make your own game engine.

The fact that you cant end a Unity process from task manager sounds like its more hardcore than a Unity problem.
The fact that you can load fine in safe mode sounds like you should take a look at your startup programs.

You might want to clean-install windows to undo whatever you or “someone else” did to bork your windows.
A quick fix could be to create a new project, close Unity, and copy/paste all essential assets and try again.
Based on your attitude, another quick fix could be to make your own engine so when something happens, you know what it was.
