Unity won't start scripts in Visual Studio 2012 when Visual Studio 2010 is installed

I have both Visual Studio 2012 and 2010 installed and even though I have selected Visual Studio 2012 as my “External Script Editor” Unity opens my scripts in VS 2010.

I have tried to manually set the file associations, this works outside of Unity. I have also tried to uninstall and re-install VS 2012 and VS 2010. Independent of which order I install them the problem remains. Further more I’ve tried adding an entry via “regedit” in order to ensure that Visual Studio Version Selector finds the path to the exe.

Does anyone else have the same problem? Is this a known issue?

I had a similar problem with VS2010 & VS2013 and none of the above tips helped

I eventually got it working by installing Visual Studio 2013 Tools for Unity and starting Unity as Administrator. Until I started it as Admin it still insisted on running VS2010

It seems that regardless, Unity wants to default the older version of VS. Is there a reason that you cannot just leave VS 2010 uninstalled?

Had this issue myself… fixed it by running a repair on VS2012
