Unity 5.6 is working here on Windows 10 Creators Update, so it can’t be a general error.
Just got the exact problem, been skipping update while working on Unity and windows decided to restart my PC for me.
Now when i open unity i get the select project page and then a error box “Failed to Initialize unity graphics.” comes up after i click on my project or a new project
Yay for updates…
Have you tried performing a restart (as opposed to a shut down), as this should bypass fast-boot. I remember reading an older post regarding the Anniversary update where the same error appeared and this did the trick.
Failing that, it’s also worth checking that the update hasn’t replaced / reset your graphics drivers.
Restart fixed it, seems major Windows updates need a few restarts to get everything working again, thanks.
Well I’m having a great time… just had spinning dots of death now, had to safe mode and disable graphics drivers now back in and uninstalled nvida drivers fingers crossed a reinstall will work and i can carry on building. Thanks for the tip @Vectorbox reminded me this happend on last major content with x2 hard drives had to disable one lol… Fun times.
Seems its stopped opening again, having to restart to get it working again, Unity devs need to do something.
Have you tried deleting your Library folder (and Temp if it exists)? For me if Unity is having problems opening, it’s usually a messed up project file or cache, and deleting the Library folder before opening Unity forces it to rebuild everything (of course, in a large project that can take quite a bit of time…)
The launcher itself won’t open, so it’s not a project issue.
Windows 10 Creators update still causes graphic error on Unity 5.6 1f1 (64bit version).
It fail to initialize graphic when tried to open projects.
I got screwed by updating too. When (if) I manage to get Unity open the windows are all blank. Mostly the application hangs after selecting a project from the project window. Creating a new project hangs also (so deleting the temp folder won’t help!)

Although I didn’t have any problems with W10 Creators Edition (Unity 5.6.1f1 x64) on my laptop, I did receive the same ‘failed to initialize graphics’ error on my workstation. I downloaded the latest driver release from the GeForce drivers page, performed a clean install and it resolved the issue.
Worth a try if you’re using Nvidia based card(s).
Probably not the right place to post this but the latest Windows Update seems to prevent games created in Unity from launching.
This error comes up
Switching to resolution 0x0 failed, trying lower one
Switching to resolution 0x0 failed, trying lower one
All resolution switches have failed
Screen: could not switch resolution (1920x1080 fs=1 hz=0)
I’ve experienced this on Tyranny, Torment, Pillars of Eternity and Life Is Strange Before te Storm. I have my system output to a 50" TV with it set only to display on the TV. A workaround I have discovered is extending the displays and the game will launch althogh BTS only shows as a black screen.
same problem here creator update and reinstalled unity, no specific message crash but loading a project, still gave a …blank page, lol there is no update since 20 december, lmao, unity rules… of course i’m up to date with nvidia pilot 388.71 on 1060 6go
same here Full re-install, nvidia up to date, have tried nvidia panel settings, since fall creator update, i’ve got just the menu of Unity and a blank page.
I’m in the same boat. Win 10 upgrade, now I can’t open new or existing Unity files.
I get a “failed to initialize Unity graphics” error.
Ran dxdiag. There appears to be no problems.
I have a Toshiba laptop.
Standard - Intel HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M - both appear to have been updated by the Win 10 upgrade and seem OK.
Unity 5.3.7.
Help please.
I tried to update the NVIDIA driver. It failed and locked up the PC. I rebooted and Win 10 started updating. It failed and uninstalled itself.
However, Unity is now working again!
What is going on here?
Did anyone manage to resolve this issue? I had this issue a while back but just rolled by the version of windows I was on, but now when I do this, Windows will just auto install updates eventually and I can’t do anything. This also seem to affect most games on my system that I try to launch, usually to a black screen.
