I’m considering upgrading to Unity3, but everywhere where it says ‘free’, it appears to be refering to a trial (30 days), and not to a full version, like Unity2.6 had. Is Unity3 still free (limited version ofcourse)? Thanks!
Yep its free 100% - just choose the free license when registering it

Unity Free will always be available and they will always have a free version. I think HiggyB stated this somewhere on the forum which I couldn’t find with a quick search. Anyway, yep Unity will always have an indie version and it will always be free.
When I installed,it did not ask me trial or pro license.It simply says unity is activated.I don’t want to use trial yet.
you have done something wrong.
during the setup: Previous version will be removed, then the new version will be installed automaticly.
After that it clearly asks to activate before you can use it. (through internet or manually)
with internet activation selected, a site will open up, asking you what type of license you want.
(trial, or free)
