Unity3D 2017 - is Ryzen or Intel a better solution for new workstation?

Hello,

My current i5 3350p / 8gb 1600mhz ram enough for my projects anymore.

So I’m here asking all of you what should I buy

My most difficult question is: Should I go with Ryzen 7 1700 or Intel equivalent?

Disclaimer: I won’t change my gpu for now which is GTX 770

My current pc isn’t powerful starts to be not powerful enough to get all the lightmaps done in right time.

I’d appreciate any help with this one.

The Ryzen 7 will handle lightmaps faster using the additional CPU cores.

Your Intel equivalent is seriously out of date. They’ve since released two new generations. The i5-8600K is a superior option both in performance and price to the i7-6800K. That said for multi-core operations the Ryzen 7 1700 is way better still.

I don’t play much. I’m doing alot of Unity, archviz and VR related stuff. Level design mainly. I saw on some old post some comparison directly in Unity (or unreal, can’t remember now really) - where 1700 had slightly worse than 6800k.

is there anyone who uses Ryzen with unity?

Me. I’m on a Ryzen 5 1600X with 16GB DDR4-2666 and an X370 motherboard.

How does it compare to whatever you were using before?

Can you tell me the difference between your current config and the previous one? What specs you had with the previous configuration?

Previous configuration was a Phenom II X4 965 with 16GB DDR3-1333 on an 870 motherboard.

The Phenom II is roughly comparable to a first or second generation Intel Core i7 processor. The Ryzen 5 1600X is thus approximately 50% faster per core and has two more cores than the Phenom II X4 965. Being a programmer I’m greatly affected by compile times and so far I’m seeing a massive improvement. Haven’t timed it but it’s very visible.
