Unity's base audio engine?

I’ve been searching for a quote by Karen Collins on game audio engines, where she states that Unity had essentially bought a proprietary non-license version of Fmod back in 2005 or sometime close to that. However a number of people i have spoke to state that Unity must use OpenAL due to the structure and low level code.
Can anyone shed some light on this, staff or otherwise?

Thanks again

Unity uses FMOD as their lowlevel audio engine. I think they are working on their own solution. But nothing has been new revealed for quite a while now.
