Great article, I am very inspired by it. Mr.Helgason, you are an iconoclast and my hero.
I found the article using google alerts, I get a “unity 3D” update everyday.
My only question is, why isn’t this message from David on the Announcements section? We are the community of developers, aren’t we? I’ll eat my hat when I see the keynote video on the blog tomorrow.
I think the point is thinking big. It’s a different thing to just try do something big without thinking it through rationally and making informed decisions
Mr.Wrong, I’m glad you read this. I, like you, have no sense of humor.
At this risk of making enemies of the rest of you- I can see why Helgason et al. didn’t post this message to the forums, lol.
Who is it directed to though? Gamasutra?
But seriously, I’m really glad we have the gossip section! NPR reported today that gossip was a very important evolutionary development for human beings.
I think he urged people to think big at a live conference. It would be nice if he touched base with the users from time to time to keep us focussed. I think a great leader isn’t afraid to mingle with the troops so to speak.
When I was being abused (sworn at and run down) by a member in pms and on the forums as well as being threatened (bizarre behaviour for a programming forum isnt it?) both higgy B and david H actually pm’d me to apologise and removed the person - this is a sign that they do care about people.
Thats rare for a company, and I only hope that 450,000 users do not stop that from continuing, no matter how busy you are. Currently that is the reason why unity is on the outside looking at the cracks in the wall.
Once they stop mingling with us, our cracks may show in our wall.
That’s why I am here now. If you or other people have a problem then please feel free to contact me or any other administrator/moderator on here. David H. and Tom H. are extremely busy people and it’s not always easy for them to help everyone. They do their best though
It’s not enough Thomas with all respect to you, people appreciate the presence of the leader on the forums. You are very helpful, and a long-term respected member, but you are still not the boss.
To appreciate how it feels when the boss posts, you feel inspired like “yes he is watching, yes lets do something great” it is a natural thing. One post a week isn’t “too busy” sorry!
Wasn’t talking about help, was talking about forum presence, or a bit of encouragement/random comment. It’s enough
All I’m saying is that this is a GREAT message, and we should be thinking big! Get the news out. The folks at Unity are brilliant, like Apple used to be, in its infancy. I don’t expect David or Tom to spend their days on the forums, I’m certain they and everyone else at Unity are very busy, I think they are doing a great job. I agree with you hippocoder, I would love to see some cheer-leading INSIDE the forums, as well as all the hype I see about this very community from external industry publications. Like i said, I’ll eat my tie when the keynote video is posted.
David’s message is just a really important message, we all should hear it and head it. We’re in the right place at the right time.
I completely agree with this message. Setting ourselves higher goals encourages, even forces, creative thinking in a bid to achieve these goals. In game development, we need this kind of revolutionary thinking!
