Unnamed Dungeon Crawler - WIP build and devlog

I thought i’d let you fine people know that I’ve set up a website and development log, for my indie group Blue Galaxy, that will cover the game I’m working on.

The game is going to be a dungeon crawler but I want to innovate a bit on the combat and AI. So far I’ve only gotten as far as implementing some simple movement, gates and keys. I’m working full time on this though so it should progress quickly.

Some planned features:

Brutal realtime combat with dodging, blocking and special skills.
Lots of armour and weapons each with a unique model.
Clever enemies that behave in interesting ways.

Here is a link to the current build of the game, when it’s finished I’ll also release a standalone version.

My intention is to build a fully featured hour long demo before christmas, then if there’s a lot of interest I’ll work out a way to fund this and work towards a commercial release =]

Wow, that looks great. Nice use of the lighting as well. Loved going near closed gates =D Good luck on the project.

This is downright amazing! And with just the right amount/kind of detail… Are you using some kind of tileset?

Keep it up, this is seriously good.

Very nice, the gate is cool.

Thanks!

The ground is put together from a tileset I made in blender.

Very visually appealing! Great work! I really want to see that action, but so far SO GOOD

Indeed the gates are very cool:)

The idea of using the firesprite works really well too - i thought the light source seemed a bit odd in the previous version of this, but now it makes more sense. Perhaps it could use a Halo/Spark type billboard on sprite to make it feel more like a character instead of just a floating particle effect.

Looking forward to seeing some combat

I got some simple AI controlled goblins in the build now, they don’t attack or anything but they make the world feel more alive.

Those poor little goblins died mercilessly to my wrath  The running away reminds me a lot of the Fallen in Diablo2, and i love the way the eyes stand out in dark area’s ahead of where the player is moving

Nice work

The lighting is done very well! Keep up the good work!

Feels very smooth! Love it!

This is pretty damn cool

Great work - will be follow this as I am creating an RPG as well.

I updated the build on my website again!

very, very good. The look definitely grabs you. Took a bit to get used to the opposite game mechanic (mouse to move and wasd to strike). I went through the first gate and then down a path to the right and a dozen goblins got me (arrrghh, my heart!).

wow, great work!. I have to agree with caldepen, the controls are quite unusual. I think, you want to try a different approach for controls in RPG/Hack ´n Slash games. So, I´m waiting with commenting on that, untill the full combat system is implemented.
But you really did great work on graphics and mood. I especially like the health indicator.
Are you doing Audio yourself?

Another nice update  It does take a bit of getting used to the control system, it felt ok in the end, but still a little awkward. It might be worth considering (or even prototpying) an alternate control system more similar to the ‘traditional’ WASD move / Mouse attack that people will be used to, although i can see what your trying to do with this (i’ve done similar work on a ‘reactionary’ RPG combat system before - mighty tricky to get right!)

You could use WASD movement, with LMD and RMB for your attack combos (or maybe even combo them with the movement keys depending on how complex you want the system to be), and still do dodge/dives with double-taps of the movment keys ( Double A to dive left etc) and maybe something like Shift to block (its near enough to the WASD keys to be convienent).

The camera might have to swapped to be behind the player with this sort of system (to help it make sense which way your evading etc) but with you game looking as good as it does, i doubt that would ruin anything at all

Either way, nice progress your making, keep it up!

controls are a little strange, but not difficult.

The beating heart is cryptic  Like the little goblins too.

Very nicely modeled and animated, and the controls are quite smooth. It only took me a couple tries to get used to the controls.

What I really liked was, even though I got beat down by a huge mob of goblings, I realized that I could have used a different strategy and been able to beat them. This is a really solid start; great job!

This is amazing, love it!
