Unreal Development Kit to include Scaleform GFX

Link.

Every dev knows how awesome such an implementation is.

Please Unity, can you bring it to us, too ?

kid voice Pleaaaaaaaase, please please please please !

I short looking at Scaleform GFx and yes, it would be a great thing to use it with Unity.

But i see no price on the website, so its not cheap? Too expensive for Unity?

Its in a 4 to 5 figure range per title.

Also Unity 3 already got some shit expensive technologies in which normally cost 80k and 30k per title so I’m not sure how much room there is for them to grow. But I guess Scaleform might see some serious potentially with it too, thats why the UDK has it as well without the requirement of per project licensing (same as their SpeedTree)

Yeah, Unity 3 already includes tons of very expensive techs, I admit

But wouldn’t investing in Scaleform GFX just be a net benefit in the end, as it would resolve the whole Unity 2D support ?
(and therefore attract these truckloads of artists who didn’t want to use Unity because of that 2D void)

Not sure about that.
Depends on if it would become available to all or just to Unity Pro like Beast and Umbra.

Also I’ve serious doubts about it even being related to Unity 2D capabilities. Its a GUI system, not a 2D engine. Also a 2D system is already confirmed and listed for Unity 3

Oh, I forgot that

The scaleform guys have expressed interest and willingness to work with Unity in the past - I’m hopeful that it’s one of the un-announced features of Unity 3!

Steamworks is free for any game developer from valve, but is it integrated into their UDK?

Didn’t know that, that’s breakingly awesome

According to the news, yes.

I wonder if Unity might be better of writing their own hardware accelerated vector graphics. It’s not exactly difficult and I don’t know that they need all that extra stuff that Scaleform has to manage other aspects of the game system. After all, once you can draw a filled curve you’re more or less done.

not really because drawing it gives you 0% on interactivity nor will it allow performant movie playback (as the movie stuff is an integral part of it, at least I hope cause the current movie support is more than just slightly lacking … I think aside of torque there isn’t a technology with a more laughable movie support)

The ogg theora system is just a shame for unity

really, I cannot understand this. Its a PRO only feature but it really has indy quality.

In UDK you can license BINK video (yes, you read it well, THE BINK, the best in the world) for around $250 per title. Thats peanuts to anyone buying PRO unity.

I do really hope that UT can get into unity3 or higher better quality video at lower bitrates (off theora imho uses about 2 times to much datarate for same quality) and scaleform would be great for being able to play some flash content onto textures, even if I’m very well aware that scaleform is only a light version of flash support, but they seem to allready be making actionscript support, so its very powerfull.

Actually, the sole fact of letting gamemakers to do Flash based UIs would be a huge user experience quality boost.

A bad UI can completely destroy an excellent game.
It is the boat between the user’s coast and the dev’s isle, after all …

I really like to see SpeedTree on Unity. Its about 5K per title but Unity making some kind of deal (same as Umbra or Beast) will be very very nice.
I really like the tree designer, it allows you to create custom vegetation in a matter of minutes.

Back on topic, yes Scaleform GFX would also be awesome on Unity.

I don’t see any chance for SpeedTree to happen actually.

Its a massive sizebomb for the webplayer (master nogo #1) and just the library for it also makes no sense as you can’t create trees withotu having the $10k / title license and even then you are forced to own ultra priced modelling software to create them, at least last I checked through it around ST 5.0. (master nogo #2)

All in all one would declare that as hell a lot unity unfriendly

Also, if UT implements geometry instancing and refines the tree code there isn’t much broken in it.
its not like speed tree changing the world and making it all nicer. Lord of the Rings Online has shown that even high end technology like SpeedTree in the hand of of unqualified designers leads to popup parties with trees that I haven’t seen since dx7 days … and thats when you play LotRO on highest settings not some min quali.

@dreamora, do you have a link where a new 2D system is announced for unity3d? I’ve heard rumours but not yet anything written

Tnx

Just remember every bit of technology they license takes away revenue from Unity…

They need to squeeze a lot of revenue from that 1.2k per seat…

So either they have to increase the cost or make less profit or maybe even a loss.

If I recall correctly Scaleform uses a ‘cracked out’ Flash derivative, which would be rather counter intuitive for Unity to integrate with this whole iPhone/iPad hate on for flash.

I suppose the video could be better but really, video is totally unrelated to vectographics. That this system includes video support, like flash does, doesn’t really mean the two have to be connected. While UT can improve on the video support, the vector part is really its own entity.
