Hey guys. Unreal Engine 4.1 released with full support with xbox one and ps4. When will unity do the same?
both are already supported if you are licensed dev
Soon, probably. Even then you still have to get a licence from Sony/Microsoft to even develop for their consoles.
Do you have access to a dev kit on either platform? Because the answer is of no use to you either way if you don’t.
Who cares?
Who honestly cares?
Seriously, I am sick to death of people bringing this shit up because it universally means they have nothing to add to the conversation, or, in other cases, don’t know the answer to any of the questions asked. Sometimes a thread comes up that asks “does Unity support 3DS deployment” or something like that and instead of adding anything to the conversation, people just say "it doesn’t matter, you need a dev license first. But the thing is? Most people know this already. Most people want to know if Unity specifically supports this. In fact, even your little post here doesn’t add anything! For instance, you don’t cover the fact that if you get accepted to ID@Xbox, Microsoft gives you a Unity Pro license and the ability to deploy to the Xbox One. Instead, all you do is go "doesn’t matter, you need a dev kit.
Are you licensed developper ? Have you made already some game for Sony or Microsoft ? Have you got their approval ? Showed them a great game ?
If no to all questions : just forget the words “full support with xbox one and ps4” , this is not for you could it be UE4 , Unity or Whatever.
I didn’t know that , first time i read it.
Why Unity don’t show it more strongly on their site ?
http://unity3d.com/unity/multiplatform/consoles
There is no information official about that at all ?
I do thank you, I’m not sure what you’re adding to the conversation here?
It’s great Unreal released it, that being said Unity have been doing it for a while. It’s all the other things in 4.1 I’m interested in, the option to publish to these platforms is a must.
This is the equivalent of when you were a kid and saw something really cool, then said to your buddy “yeah, I could do that, but I don’t wanna.”
That was my point, actually. Very few people need to care about that.
Then feel free to leave this forum to any other that is more tailored to your needs.
I do know the answer to that questions, as would most people keeping up with the forum. Also I wouldn’t be too sure about the universality of your assertion, because pointing out the dev kit requirement is relevant and does indeed add to the conversation.
Says who? You? What qualifies you to assume the knowledge and thoughts of “most people”? And you definitely don’t speak for the OP and his or her knowledge level.
Sorry, but, unlike you, when I see someone asking something like “when will Unity support PS4 and XBox One”, I don’t instantly think “this person has obviously done their homework and knows everything a potential customer needs to know about console development, they just need a very specific answer to that question.” Instead I’m more likely to think that the OP could probably benefit from knowing about the dev kit requirement and what that entails. And if I were less charitable I would notice that the OP didn’t ask if Unity supports PS4 and XBox one, but asked when it will support them, and that would in turn lead me to think that the OP might be less interested in the real answer and more interested in sparking yet another Unreal vs Unity debate.
If “most people” wanted only factual information free of any debate, then they shouldn’t post on a forum because those tend to be notorious for being forums for debate (shocking I know). The OP could have asked in Answers, which is almost guaranteed to be free of debate, or he or she could have contacted sales directly. Over here debate and opinion are par for the course.
But anyone knowing that will also know that Unity does support at least the Xbox One. And it still doesn’t rule out the dev kit requirement. So what is the point you’re trying to make exactly?
I think that both XBox One PS4 support are still works in progress is why the OP was unsure if those will be supported. I signed up to deploy to PS Vita (this is downloadable from Sony’s site and in beta too) because it was free to do so. My assumption is, and my assumption could be wrong, is that if I have a very successful game on any of Microsoft’s or Sony’s ‘open’ mobile platforms they’ll approach me to release to their ‘closed’ console platforms if I don’t contact them first, but I’d have at least 50K from one title I’d think to even consider approaching them. Now if it’s a special purpose application and not a game then I’d consider approaching them but then I’m playing the role of a salesman and I’d better have something good.
Unless there’s a valid point being raised, I’m afraid I don’t see what relevance this has with using Unity. I think it’s clear everyone knows already there’s 4.1. This is kind of just fuelling the flames.
The thread where the pricing model is being discussed has relevance here: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/242529-UE4-first-3-000-per-product-per-quarter-is-royalty-exempt as it is discussing a hotly debated point and has reason to exist.
Unity already supports consoles so this thread is locked.
TLDR: Don’t post a UE4/Shiva/Whatever update thread unless it has relevance, or concerns Unity in some way. Price currently does, and is important to users. See above link. Please don’t post topics which have been done to death. You wouldn’t post a Shiva 1.2 update thread now would you
