Hello, I know how to use, and I know that is can have problems with it when using in the EDITOR. But in a build it work properly. But my doubt is if a game should use Ctrl today? I think about compatibility, and Mac and linux ( witch I do not use for a decade ). My fear is a combination of keys like Ctrl + W + Shift, call other software or something.
Should I use Ctrl in my game or change to another key?
As long as your game has the ability to configure what keys are used ā a must in this day and age ā then any players who are running into a conflict with Ctrl or who arenāt good at hitting it while playing will have the option to change it.
Of course, if youāre going to release on PC and Mac, your Mac version should default to that funny little key of theirs. Command? Canāt remember the name.
Ctrl is a commonly used key in First/Third person games, usually for a movement mode, like sneaking. In older shooters it was also often mapped to āfireā key. IN strategy games it is very often used for unit groups.
So, yeah, you could use it, if you need it.
Also, users can use ANY key combination as a global hotkey, thereās not much you could use about it. Just leave them an option for remapping.
Try your game on a fresh install of Windows. Youāll quickly discover if you class with any of the default settings. These can always be changed, but itās often annoying.
The one I most often catch is spamming the shift key. Hitting ctrl and alt at the same time as other random keys can also lead to weird results.
Configurable input is your best defence. It also gets you around problems with people with big hands and little keyboards (or the opposite) who canāt actually reach all the default keys.
I use CTRL in the most of the casesā¦Works fine.
