I was never a fan of how terrain textures blended together using alphas look. Except for some very rare uses (sand, snow etc.), I think it looks awful and really takes me out of the game world.
Using height maps when painting terrain is an excellent solution. Grass appears in the cracks of stones and stone paths as opposed to simply blending at the edges.
I found one asset that does this and for a good price (Unity Asset Store - The Best Assets for Game Making). However I’m surprised there aren’t more assets like this.
If anyone knows about this technique or is aware of other assets that utilize it, please let me know.
