I was just trying out the Display Stats panel for the first time, and my quick reaction is mostly disappointment. I already had the ability to attach the debugger to get a rough breakdown of what was taking a long time (PrepareLightsForGPU, basic rendering, etc), and I was hoping this new tool would provide more granular information. But so far, it mostly seems redundant to what the profiler was already telling me.
I’d had some hope that we’d be getting closer to a point where I could find out which specific shaders or objects were creating the greatest GPU load, in order to guide my optimizing efforts. I guess this tool doesn’t provide anything like that, though?
Thanks for the feedback @dgoyette ! The Display Stats panel currently provides only the highlevel rendering information based on the FrameTimingManager and ProfilerRecorder apis. Connecting GPU load to shaders or objects fits more profiler/debugger workflow atm.
I’ve added your request to the productboard for tracking.
EDIT: Figured out the source of the confusion… the Rendering Debugging editor window uses the same keys as this Display Stats overlay thing. Didn’t realise they were the same thing in two different forms. It is kind of confusing if you don’t read slowly and properly.
Original post:
Hi @MartinTilo - I just accidentally opened the Display Stats window by pressing Left-stick + Right-stick simultaneously on my XBox controller.
I had no idea where this window originated from, so I eventually landed here looking for info.
Above you link the documentation based on someone asking how to open the panel. But in the documentation, it does not say how to open the panel. I would love to know where to find it from the Unity menu for example, or what the keyboard shortcut for it is.
(BTW I can’t find the game view dropdown you mention.)
To avoid any potential confusion, I’m referring to this window. I can’t find any information on how to show it, apart from the accidental left-stick/right-stick combo on xbox controller.
it’s in the HDRP documentation but it is inside URP as well. ANd there is no screenshot of it so I was confused. And also it doesn’t state it can be opened with double tap 3 fingers on mobile.
Ah yes, sorry, I remembered having linked to the SRP core documentation where it’s mentioned for all platforms but that must’ve been another thread. HDRP isn’t really meant for mobile so it doesn’t mention how to bring the menu up there.
They all also got quite a few updates since and the pages moved around so here’s the current URP and HDRP pages respectively as well.
