To save future viewers some time:
NO!
Pulled from Asset Store. Not Open Sourced.
To expand a bit upon the statements and the link above the developer had been in the process of migrating away from Unity for some time but the fiasco last year was the final nail in the coffin. He’s completely gone now.
Kinda ridiculous to just disappear though. To be able to show that you were able to develop and support a sellable piece of software is a briliant thing on your CV no matter what engine you use now.
Why not add a big disclaimer “No more support by the developer” and reduce the price to 5$ or free?
The asset store has no yearly fee (like mobile stores).
Anyways, I have it. If you want it, send a PM.
Perhaps you know very little about what @Eric5h5 contributions were over more than a decade, nor the validity of his reasons for gripes with Unity’s choices and processes over recent years. He was once a more adamant and ardent supporter of all things Unity than even you, and for far longer, and of much more significance, too.
It’s a sign, when someone of his ilk feels and acts as he did. I, for one, am forever grateful for his myriad of insights over that huge portion of Unity’s lifespan.
So in hope that changes Unity’s way of handling things, he renounces a career benefit as well as useful things for the community?
Okay, good luck to them with that, I guess.
Fair, but that doesn’t change that this is a bit of an irrational decision…
It just sucks when resources needlessly become less available.
also, asset store can remove non-maintained assets,
especially if some users complain enough (even if its free asset and says not supported anymore).
so sadly just leaving it out there could result complaints/harassment from users…
He was of such skill and capacity that I highly doubt ANY efforts supporting a dead product on a (possibly) decaying platform would have been anything but a drain in his income and those activities that significantly drive his reputation in whatever field he works in.
Besides, it’s an open market.
Perhaps you can make a replacement rather than offering to backdoor copies of the product to others, and make those same reputation/career and income gains for yourself.
Good luck to you!
No one has any reason to be offended that a product is no longer for sale. Buyers are not entitled to get free updates forever, and no publisher is required to even offer support at all.
If someone decides to expand their repertoire of skills or not use certain tools anymore, that’s not really anyone’s business to ciritcize. It’s not a sign, it’s not an exodus, it’s just a person doing what he wants like everyone else in the world every day.
@Eric5h5 mentioned potentially releasing the asset on GitHub which would be fine but then someone would have to keep it up to date with the editor and it’s likely just going to end up abandoned by everyone except those who already owned copies or will need more licenses.
It’s even part of the EULA. So, don’t be offended if people report your asset if you skip on support. Obviously removing your asset from circulation is one way to solve this.
Hmm, where does it say so?
Since here I see in the EULA: https://unity.com/legal/as-terms
So what you’re saying is that the EULA agrees that you’re not entitled to support.
EDIT: Disregard, I confused the quote and the reply. Post remains so you see how I TOTALLY BEEFED IT.
https://unity.com/legal/provider 4.7 Although they changed the language. It used to be explicitly said you must provide support. Now it says you should provide support and your contact info will be displayed.
Okay, thank you. Good to know.
I must’ve missed the public free-to-redistribute licensing terms of this package. Why are you trying to sneak a copy to random passersby on the down-low?
