Well, to start with, from your screenshot it looks like you don’t have any lights in your scene! Naturally, this will make it look like there’s no depth. Try adding a plane, a sun lamp and a second, dimmer sun lamp pointing in a different direction to set off the things that the first lamp can’t illuminate.
