I opened my Unity project that I had been working on in Windows on my Linux laptop.
- My i7 2.9GHz cpu is running red-hot while I have Unity open. Load is around 1.4 with Unity taking up 100% of my cpu in top. My cpu fan never stops running.
- My project basically isn’t even there to work on. My assets folder that is full of stuff when viewed in Windows is empty on Linux.
- When I created a new project on Linux just to play around Unity crashes a lot. It’s pretty much unusable.
Back to Windows I guess.

The CPU usage is indeed extremely high, hopefully they’ll fix that soon. Someone came up with a workaround, however it might not be very useful, since it’s gonna slow down the editor.

This never happened to me, are you sure you opened the correct project folder? If you haven’t deleted it yet, check if there’s an “Assets” folder where it shouldn’t be (inside the actual Assets folder, etc.)

Which build are you using? Try downloading the latest build, as most crashes have been fixed
You should keep in mind that the Linux version of the editor is currently labeled “experimental”, meaning that there’s bound to be some issues. Going back to the Windows editor (until the Linux editor is considered stable) might indeed be a good idea, if you’re not willing to put up with such issues.
Agreed, you may want to check your version “Window>About” to make sure you’re running Unity 5.4 b16. I have been using Unity under both Ubuntu and Arch without any significant issues for several months now.
That’s very strange, I used Unity on Linux all semester to develop a game for class with no issues. I’ve been working back and forth between Windows and Ubuntu, but to keep it consistent I’ve just been using Ubuntu now. I don’t understand the file issue, are you sure it’s the same project? Are you using a cloud service for that? I use MEGA to develop between platforms without issues.
Unity isn’t taking up 100% of your CPU. It’s taking up CPU-load divided by the number of cores you have. It’s more like 25% of your CPU.
I’ve just tried several Windows and OSX based projects with Unity on Linux and I’m anything but disappointed. To have a workable, albeit experimental version, of Unity on Linux is amazing. Cudos to all who helped make this happen.
