Think some of you will appreciate this. Light hearted look at the way games are presented now, but well worth watching. He makes some very valid points.

Hehe, I remember playing Megaman X a long long time ago and getting the Hadouken attack was one of the best rewards that I can remember to get from a game:)
Awesome!
Of course ! Awesome!
Thanks for sharing!
That was awesome! I think all the AAA dev’s need to watch that. I am definitely tired of the hand holding that most games have today.
Me and you should start an “Games have gone downhill thread”
Dark Souls. Play it.
Who has time to play games?
But by implying that your player has a basic level of intelligence you alienate maybe about 30% of the player base haha.
When I make web applications I always have to keep in mind who uses my application. And trust me… If they have a button in their profile that says “delete profile” I will get emails asking how they can delete their profile.
If i make a FAQ where it says how you can delete your profile I will still get emails. What do I have to do? Make the button bigger, or make a pretty embarrassingly big help text telling people how to delete their profile.
So just keep that in mind. Back in the days mostly nerds played computer games. They probably played computer games before and generally have a higher average IQ (apparently). Today more people play games, even GIRLS! (I’m not implying girls are dumber of course)
After watching the whole video, it really shows the poor quality of today’s level design. Honestly, although the video was intended as comedy, it has tons of serious points about game design. Everyone Really should watch it.
here is the first one, just as informative, if not more

lool that made me laugh so hard. And i got alot of good points out of this video as well ! thanks for sharing
It depends on what game genres you mean. And even speaking overall i dont think that is the point at all. Level design at the momment in AAA games is far more advanced and detailed than anything done before. For platformers it might not be true on all games, but sitll it is true for most platformers too.
I think that if he could make video comparision from newer games and their design that would be beyond amazing. This are very inspirational and educational for developers, it provides you some rough rules of what you shouldnt or should do, especially on graphic or level design.
Sure, it depends which way you take it. Indeed today’s levels are much more graphically impressive and detailed, but this does not mean that they are funner to play, properly paced, properly challenging, have a proper difficulty e.t.c. The first video I linked shows this more. Difficulty, enemy placement, puzzles, and subconscious player notions are thrown around in games today. Check my link and you will see this, the old games have clearly thought out the level design more, in fact, it’s almost genius how they did it.
Saw that in MakerOfGame’s FPS thread. the sad truth awaits you.
