Hi guys, I’m a couple of days into development of my new title which I am doing rapid development and all nighters to finish in time for the kongregate unity competition.
I am trying to remake the classic game “Return Fire” from the 3DO and PC. Don’t know if you guys remember it but it was a fantastic game for its time, classic capture the flag rules with vehicles to play with. I may add an element of tower defense and base building… but I feel I’ve said too much as I want to report progress as I go.
Thanks guys I can’t avoid comparisons with desert strike, nor would I want to! Amazing game if anyone was having trouble viewing the video try using the html5 player option on vimeo, seems to be a little more stable .
I’ve been so keen on a return fire remake for so long. I’ve been trying to make something similar to it in XNA. More vehicles, weapons, upgrades (upgrading specs of vehicles, weapons and buying new vehicles/attaching different weapons to different vehicles to get good combinations). Plus a base builder etc.
The concept is that you construct your base offline, then it drops all 4 players onto the map in a quadrant.
Yours looks amazing though. I’ve modelled, textured and coded mine from scratch in xna
How did you make those models/shaders/what programs etc. ?
Excellent choice for an old game to remake, and it looks great so far.
It seems to me like this kind of game was made for team-based battles as matches often felt too big and empty. Have you considered having something like 1-4 players per team?
Little bit of trivia: In between working on Urban Strike and Soviet Strike, I was trying to pick up Return Fire and brand it as Strike Force, to expand the Strike franchise and provide a “next gen” (3DO at the time) game. EA didn’t understand that a franchise could be more than just a sequel to a game and a sequel that was just more-of-the-same, so they nixed it.
Great looking game. An amazingly polished amount of work, in a short amount of time.
