Viewport Confusion

I am immensely confused on how to move around in the viewport in UNITY.

Because I am used not to the Blender interface, I find that UNITY’s way of doing it is very confusing.

Could someone point me to an all comprehensive tutorial?

Thanks

Hiya there,

There is a comprehensive interface use tutorial but…
as a new Apple user I too was a little confused so here’s what I know or have learned so far.

Try this: Set the interface up to 2 split (you do this by using the top right pulldown button/selector gizmo). In 2 split mode you have 5 areas. Scene, Game on the left side. Hierarchy and Project in the middle space, and on the right Inspector.

The main Unity work is done within Scene viewport.

Use the four keyboard keys Q, W, E, R to swap between modes use (or click on the top left buttons in the interfae with an open hand, a cross symbol with arrows, a rotation sysmbol or a diagonal cross with arrows symbol.

Its best to use a three button mouse btw.

We are mainly interested in the Scene and Game viewports here, Scene is where you work, Game is what it looks like in game. Easy see?

Q is used to enable grab and drag the camera view - you can grab anywhere inside the scene view port view and move the camera’s view by holding the left mouse button down and dragging the scene.

Whilst in this mode, Use the third mouse to roll zoom in or out. If you want to rotate the viewport simply hit the ALT key with the left mouse button down - and pull the mouse left or right.

To move objects inthe scene view hit the W key. If you have set up Unity correctly or via preferences, you can now see your fav. 3D modelling packages styled cursors on any object you select to transform. Use these to move obejcts about.

Pressing the E key will switch this transform cursor to a rotate (in 3 axis) cursor - use as you would in your fav 3D modelling tool.

Now press the R key and you can scale objects.

Hope this is of some help.

Or you could try reading the docs from here:

http://unity3d.com/support/documentation/Manual/Learning%20the%20Interface.html

Actually, the hard part is that I don’t really understand how to rotate the camera. For example, in Blender, if you press 1 on the numpad it will snap to front view.

Have you read the docs yet? Specifically this page:

Learning the Interface

The page clearly outlines how to manipulate the Scene View. And get a mouse with 3 buttons as it will be a real life saver (it is for me!).
