Hey, guys! I came across an article about Robocraft and wondered if there are developers who did Voxel games here? Is Unity really the best engine for such games?
Unity provides realtively easy api for creating geometry dynamically, and also its shaders are relatively easily hackable.
However, voxels are not natively supported by unity out of the box, meaning if you want voxels, you’ll need some sort of middleware, custom solution, framework, or something similar.
To my knowledge none of the major commercial engines support voxels in the manner the game uses out of the box, but what Unity does provide is a knowledgeable community, good documentation, and an extensive market for third party assets that can greatly assist with development.
From what I have seen the companies that largely don’t use Unity have done so because they built their own engine from the ground up for this sort of game. No Man’s Sky and Space Engineers are two examples. That said it’s an expensive approach and both companies needed extensive funding to do it.
Thank you so much, guys!
