Vram settings

Hi everyone,

I’m a little bit confused about the VRAM ammount in our Rendering Statistics Windows…

We are working on different Mac station (iMac, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro) with the same graphics card memory:

iMac: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS - 512 Mb
MacBook Pro: Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT - 512 Mb
Mac Pro: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT - 512 Mb

We are working on the same Project, but in the Rendering Statistics Windows the ammount of our VRAM is different, for example, with MacBook Pro and Mac Pro we can use only 256 Mb of VRAM.

Infact, we have noticed that the time render is faster for the iMac…

Could someone clarify this aspect? Are there any settings in Unity to afford?

Thanx in advance…

Bye Michele

P.S. Unite2008 was Fantastic, we are waiting the next meeting as soon as possible

How much VRAM is reported by OS X on each machine?

Unity just displays VRAM amount as reported by the operating system. If it says 256MB, then Unity believes it’s 256MB

About the speed: GeForce 8800 is definitely faster than GeForce 8600, no matter what is the VRAM amount (yes, VRAM size has almost no effect on performance). Why MacPro would be slower, I don’t know though.

Hi,

System Profiler Utility reports the right value of VRAM for each Graphics Card… :?

Unity displays 256 Mb only for MacPro and MacBook Pro…for iMac the value is correct!

This is a mystery… :o
we really don’t know the reason…Thanx for your help…Any suggestions?

I don’t really know. On OS X we’re using code straight from Apple’s examples (VideoHardwareInfo) to detect the amount of video memory.

Just another question, do you use this parameter only to visualize it in the statistics or also for some threadshold in the rendering?

I’ve bought e MBP with 9400M and 9600M GT.
Now I use 9600M GT. I don’t know why I have only 256 MB of total VRAM.
Any ideas?

I never noticed that before, I’m having the same problem. :frowning:

Ok, I’m not the only one with this problem… A small consolation… :?

I noticed this as well with my new MBP.

I figure that the internal integrated (9400) reports as having 256, while the secondary (which i have set as active) has 512 (9600 GT).

I too find this weird.
