VSCode Unity Debugger extension official state?

Hey, I couldn’t find anything related to this here, so I have to ask: what’s the official state of the unity debugger vscode extension?

I’ve searched the github repo, and already 3 times other people have asked it in 3 open issues (this one, this one, and this one). I know the README starts with a very clear

This extension is not officially supported by Unity Technologies.

I get it. It’s probably dead in the water and won’t be updated ever again. But, please, can someone officially say it? I get mixed signals when you have an official VSCode extension in the package manager that’s up-to-date.

The extension (unity debugger) works fine-ish for me, but I worry it might stop working anytime soon, and I really wouldn’t want to use VS Community. Perhaps Rider, but it’s paid and that would suck.

Please, can anyone officially say where it’s going?

Seconded! The debugger is linked to from official VS Code documentation ( Visual Studio Code and Unity ) and it says is from “Unity Technologies”. Hasn’t been updated in a couple years. VS Code is very popular. I can no longer debug with Unity 2018, but it seems to mostly work with 2021. (mostly… some conditions cause it to crash or stop communicating with Unity and then the only fix is restarting everything).

Come on Unity, float some cash to that developer so they can continue updating it!

I should have bumped this here, but Unity does not intend to continue to support VSCode. We should either take control of the plugin via a community fork or migrate off of the platform. https://github.com/Unity-Technologies/vscode-unity-debug/issues/206#issuecomment-1141289744

Just want to emphasize this statement

I have a love/hate relationship with Unity sometimes. Why do you guys do this to us? Is it a funding issue? What is it?
