WAIT FOR IT ... ANOTHER ZOMBIE GAME ... Need your ideas !!!

Hi there, I’ve been learning game development and Unity for a while on my free time and as of now i’ve done some small map tests and small game levels and I want to try to make a zombie game. I’m a pretty good modeler and i’m comfortable animating, I’m less of a programmer tho I am a web master at my work, but i can still manage with a bit of time. I wanted some fresh ideas for my game. First off, it’s an open world game, as of now i’ve done all the streets and a couple of buildings but i’m not too far in the process. So here is where you come in, I want some ggod ideas to make my game different from others i dont want too just run around and shoot zombies (there is gonna be a lot of that too). It could be a bit of an rpg game. but throw me some ideas, it could be monsters, gaming mecanics, HUD ideas, special features, innovative stuff. Oh and its a first person a bit like mirrors edge where you can see your body. Thanks and have fun.

here we go

*collecting or looting materials which you can build barricades doors etc (which used together can be built into a
bunker , base whatever

  • i think you should have only one type of zombie but diffrent looks (cuz its more fun to run and gun than haveing to
restrategize every time you spot a new type of zombie.(unless you want a less of a pick up and play game).

  • dismemberment i don’t know why so many commercial zombie games leave out blowing off limbs its just part of
    the zombie experiance.

  • plus i got some more pm me tho!
would you like some help on it been looking to get into a game

Here’s my list:

  • Realistic blood splatters on screen.
    -A good variety of weapons
    -Scary
    -A chainsaw. Definitely a chainsaw.
-As logana60 said, dismemberment, but a good kind where you can aim at any appendage to dismember it.
    -Good graphics
-If you do go with multiple zombie types, make them scares in the game, not an entire swarm of different zombies
-Realistic gameplay with as few limits as possible, so to cause immersion
    -Don’t be afraid of gore.
-Make the game special; give it something different than other zombie games on the market.

Ok thanks a lot guys and post as many as you want.

  • I really like the barricade idea thats a good one

I was thinking of a lot on those lists but for the zombies I was thinking about a really huge swarm of zombies a bit like in the resident evil 4 movie but the game is open world so i think too many wouldnt be good either so maybe as much as there is pedestrians in gran theft auto

for the dismemberment i was thinkin about that too it all depends on how much time I have but I’ll put in at least a basic dismemberment to start with. I’ll soon be making a site to post my stuff on but I have a load of work to do so I hope it’ll be soon enough.

Very much appreciated !

Vincent

Disemberment! Is just some basic coding you should go for it! It would make the whole experience alot better.

No guns. That would be interesting. Even if you find a gun, make it be out of ammo so you have to clobber all the undead to death! Makes for an up close and personal experience.

Yay another zombie game!

Im working on a zombie game too!

I got cool blood splats on the screen as someone suggestion above. My game is mostly a motorcycle game but when you get down to 0% i do a greyscale post processing effect with red blood overlay, you pull out a pistol to pop off a few more zombies before you die. Kind of inspired by last stand.

Another Zombie Game…

Well, you have the basic concepts seen in video games, build barricades, intense gore, melee weapons, unique variants of zombies.

However as many people want to recreate a game similiar to left 4 dead, do note that the general idea of zombies is to instill fear on the player(unless you’re making an action horror). The player has to feel weak, defenceless at the start, and has to be on the heels to get away from the monsters. Being slow and easy to be killed(Resident Evil), weapons that jam(Stalker game series), breakable melee weapons(Silent Hill), hunter-predator mindset(Alan Wake Amnesia: The Dark Descent).

The idea of being vulnerable and having unpredictability breaks the boredom that most modern horror games would instill the player after a few cheap scares. To make things more interesting, try minor puzzles that aid the player to take out a large group of enemies in one go or open an escape route for the player to escape from harm.

There are many ways to make your game stand out apart from the other that failed to gave the audience a great survival/panic horror game, that is if you wish to choose that path.

On a side note, I hate horror games and zombies…

Yeah I know I know but I just like zombies but I dont want to make a “general” zombie game and I do want the player to feel weak. There is gonna be a lot of weapons but most of them all broken up and without ammo etc. I want it to be scary but is it possible in an open world game, I mean I cant have the same zombies do the same things over and over again it wont be scary anymore. I want the ennemies to be “fked up” a bit like in Dead Space or Slient Hill and the ambience like in the silent hill games. It’ll be easy to die even with the basic zombies so it’ll amp up the strategy. I want it to be different from other games but i have yet to find THE GREAT IDEA that would make my game good, I’m not a professionnal it’s just my hobby but I am very passionnate about my stuff and even if it takes a long time to do and it’s not that good i’m gonna learn from it.

I really like some of your ideas and keep them coming it’s giving me some good ones.

Oh and mehware nice project you got there, if I have questions may I ask you for some help or any other person that is willing to help me is very much appreciated, I’m alone for this project, we were 2 but the other guy is in college and has a 15 week project to do so he 's unavailable but I work pretty quickly when I have the time lol.

Any tips on SCARY stuff would help too, any idea is helpful, on any part of the game.

PS: I really like the community here everyone is so helpful thanks a lot people

Vincent

I just thought of this would it be good to have materials that you find it abit like in an rts, when you have all the materials you can create small shelters and barricades a bit like the features in the new starhawk game from sony, like popping in like in the trailer here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBv3aSpm_4I

Thanks logana60

Just wondering, if you want ideas to make a game that’s different from other people, why are you copying them by making a zombie game? lol

Anyway. Make the zombies explode. Make flying zombies. Make zombies with special powers like bilocation. Make zombies that throw things.

I’m asking what people find attracting from a game and not make another left for dead game, yes I’am asking for ideas but this is how you get good feedback well IMHO, I have my main idea just looking for what people like thats all. Oh and thanks for helping me anyway.

EDIT: Oh and I’m not gonna make the next big game anyways it’s just for me to develop skills and have fun with something I really like doing and yes a zombie game is kinda an easy start, the ai is “dead” and you just have to shoot them until they blow up and stuff I’m kinda moving away from that but you know it’s still a zombie game after all, it’s my first game and i’m just hereto learn.

Since you are asking for opinions on what people see as good zombie game, i will tell you that everything he described for me and bunch of my friends is not a good zombie game.
What is from my perspective a good zombie game, is something that is following cliche rather than trying to make fantasy zombies. So basically zombies that are slow and also fast, zombies that cannot use weapons or any advanced objects that would make them too human, basically connecting zombie with what it should be zombie from old movies. To me it is very important that you make good zombie, it shouldnt be just something to kill, but rather zombie appearance and behaviour should be state of art, something that is designed carefully with a lot of thought. It might sound wierd but that is what makes good zombie game. Also to me good zombie game with replay value is game with close, small levels where player has to struggle for survival and is in constant attack of zombies and not maps where he has to escort whole island to find 1 zombie.

So to keep it short, you have basically two designs to make with zombie game. One is action filled (more likely arcade) styled zombie game, with instant action and one is more RPG styled game where player is escorting for zombies. Pick either one of those, there is mass of players that likes first, and mass that likes second, do not mix it up with something mediocre. That is a fail.

What about a zombie game where you are a zombie?

I think that this is part of a good game too, but I still want to have types of zombies, because in my opinion seing the same thing for too long gets long, for example, I like playing L4D but after a while I get tired of seing the same stuff over and over so i wanted to le the player feel a bit more free but still get him to be scared of going out, thats why i wanted a more rpg “ish” game with an open world. I also aggree on the small level part but I think it couldnt work with what i wanted to do, a zombie world or city… I want the player to feel the infection and that the rest of the cities are also infected and that its a struggle to survive, there is still place for changement, I’m not very far in the process of making my game, i’m more on making the guidelines I guess while I have started some modeling.

There is a surprise related to that but I’ll talk about it later when the game has started…

I was wondering, should I concentrate on modeling first then putting the game together or a bit of everything as I go.

slightly off topic, and i have a couple ideas for you, but first a question. has anyone ever tried a zombie Vs. humans RTS?

Not sure about that one, it probably exists but I never heard of a game like that.

Setting: Inside a office; on the 23rd floor
Time: 2:27 P.M
Outbreak Dated: 2:31 P.M April 27th 2014

Story:
In office; on a Monday afternoon; In the city of [Imagination] etc.
Main Character;
His name is John;
Approx 2:29 P.M: HD-TV Monitor; breaking news; flashes on the screen.

Imagine; the zombie outbreak JUST happening right outside your building; and on the TV is a news reporter; and she gets mauled by two zombies, screaming. Everyone around you is frightened; about what just happened outside: the very building you are in, your skin crawling; the feeling of FEAR.

John is worried about his wife; and decides to call her, and leaves a message. Meanwhile a couple of colleagues around you, decide its best to take the elevator down to the first floor. However you decide; It’s best to take the stairscase; as you slip into the staircase; and start walking down. You hear screams from your collegues, as you realize, whatever attacked the news reporter below; or someone as crazed, walked into the elevator. John continues down the long and neverending staircase.

JOHNS MISSION
John must; leave the city, and go to his house. to find his wife!

Alright; I had some fun writing that above; I absolutely LOVE zombies; my favorite. Sadly, I was unable to write down far enough, to truly describe what type of zombie game; id like to be able to play.

Basically; I would want to see a zombie game; were you run away from the zombies! [Unarmed] A game that is not about kicking ass; shooting; guns blazing; tearing zombies guts out. [As fun as it is; I do love the zombies guts flying]

Realistically; I would want to experience; the happening of the zombie outbreak, the first ten-minutes and onwards; id want to be a frightened civilian; who runs away from the undead. Trying to survive; and Not get bitten!

Barricading; Running your ass off; and my all time favorite SURVIVING throughout the undead ruling.

That is all; I have to truly offer; > It’s up to you; to make the dream happen. FLESH EATING ZOMBIES; RUN!!!

My favorite zombie game of all-time, where my simplistic yet bright ideas came from; would be a simple yet amazing flash game.
