Water, terrain assets and draw calls

I’m sure I saw a post about this a long time ago but can’t for the life of me find it now and I only vaguely remember it. I think one of the Unity team explained how you can optimize the water reflections to bring down the draw calls. I think it was in relation to having lots of trees/vegetation near a body of water.
I’d appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction if it rings a bell.

You can take a look at what is done by water script in the Island Demo.

Basically, it uses a modified version of the water script, where it lowers all terrain detail while rendering reflection/refraction. There’s no reason to render grass for 100 meters in the reflection, for example (maybe you can turn it off completely even).
