Just a quick post to find out if the web forum servers are taking strain? I’ve been experiencing a marked slow down on searches over the past week or so! Anybody else having problems too?
Yep - me too… for the last couple of weeks.
It was ok for a few hours the other day - but I think they rebooted the server.
I guess its a hosting issue.
tony secretly wonders what he would need to do to get Unity to change from phpbb to SMF.
Yep, I think you’re right Tony. New hosting could do the trick! How about some advanced search capabilities as well Unity? The forums are such a vital source of Unity3D information that it would be great to search on phrase exact match, etc.
The forums are indeed a vital source for Unity users and unfortunately it’s slowly breaking down. We’re well aware of this and hope to make some significant changes in the near future.
Thanks Ethan! That would be great!
Good to hear, I often run into slow forum response so any fix is welcome.
I was about to ask this myself. With all the slowdowns, I was seriously wondering if Safari 4 was slower than 3. Good to know that my browser isn’t broken :). Although, your server recently complained that it couldn’t connect to the database. I’m hoping that’s because it was restarted.
Also, have you considered a custom Google search? I don’t like phpBB’s search since it normally brings back irrelevant entries, and now seems to be slow as well.
Well, I have a spare server that I dont mind letting Unity use for the DB backend temporarily whilst you sort out the new server.
Its a HP Proliant G4p with Dual Core 3.6 GHz Xeon, 2MB L2 cache and 8gb of Ram.
You can just move the DB over and do a remote connection from phpbb - which should only take about 15 minutes to do.
I know it would be powerful enough because I run a big board on another server that has a lower spec - and that handles 1600 active users without trouble.
Its just a thought
