Hello, I just wanted to let you know WebGL for Chrome (guessing the latest version) there isn’t an Update inside “more” tab at the top right from my research it’s supposed to show if there’s an update in there.
Here is a video. (please watch all of it - 30 seconds roughly)… You’ll see the character shadow bleeding as well.
From what I can tell it works fine in FireFox, I don’t have any other browsers.
I’ve been seeing this same problem on a project of my own. Funny thing is I was browsing the forum for any sign of other people seeing it too, and this was on top of the list.
What I’ve found is that in older versions of Chrome it’s not a problem. I found older versions here:
In version chrome64_55.0.2883.75 the problem is present. But a previous version I tried, chrome64_54.0.2840.71, doesn’t have the problem.
I checked with the client for whom I was doing this project and they weren’t seeing it on their end (not sure of their specs, but probably a Macbook Pro). I also didn’t see it on my laptops, one a Macbook air, and one an old PC running Linux.
So I’m wondering if it’s some combination of video card issue and some tweak that Chrome made. Seems like if it was widespread I’d have seen more about it - and Chrome would have a fix by now.
It’s been a couple months I’ve been seeing it and just haven’t had the time to follow up.
I’ve got a AMD Radeon R9 390. (I see there’s a software update, so maybe I’ll try that now. Edit: Got the latest, still have the problem.)
Hope that helps! Please post here if you find out any more.
EDIT: Here’s an image of another project I have that is getting the problem:
You can see how the weird broken shadow in the first image is almost like a capture of all the realtime shadow elements in the bottom image. And then that image remains on screen instead of updating properly.
I’m glad I’m not the only one facing this issue. But you’re the first person I’ve seen say they are getting this issue as well.
I mean working in older browsers is fine and all (Haven’t tested - just saying it’s fine for testing and all). But I’ll refuse to release my game if these issues occur, even though it’s still awhile before release, I just hope they can get to it as soon as they can. Right now I just have shadows turned off completely.
@Buhlaine figured I’d let you know about this so an official can spread the word to the proper people(s).
Yeah the older version of Chrome isn’t so much a workable option as it is something to test to see if you get the same result, and if you do, to report it to Google: This feature stopped working properly as of this release. That would really help their efforts to track it down. I haven’t had a chance to submit a report to them, but I’m planning on it. Certainly the more people who do the better.
N1warhead, I was digging around some Chrome help forums, and found a way to make the shadows work correctly; it’s not an acceptable solution, but it might hint at a real solution. Basically go into your settings, click “show advanced settings” if you need to, and then uncheck “Use hardware acceleration when available”, then restart Chrome. This got the shadows working correctly for me, but caused horrendous slowdown in framerate.
I also posted a bug to Chrome, and I’ll post here if I get a response.
I just tried and now it just plainly won’t load my game at all, gives me errors like WebGL is not Supported like 4 times and then just stays white lol.
Well I submitted it, but have not received a link to a bug tracker - I suspect what I submitted counts more as feedback and has to be elevated to the status of a bug before it can be tracked. Will keep an eye out of anything along those lines and keep you posted.
