Webplayer content feels strange...

The last days i sometimes do have content which doesn’t steer correctly anymore.

o In fullscreen the content is jerking a lot.
o Wheel isn’t working in both modes.

Nothing has been changed on my side. 10.4.9 since some time, content which ran fine before and the mouse is working as expected in other apps. Has there anything changed in the webplayer (how can i see if there has been an update?) and has anyone else experienced this?

Regards,

taumel

Yep, there must be something wrong. If i republish (1.6.1) the content, it works in the IDE and as a standalone but not in the webplayer anymore…

Also experienced strangeness in the webplayer. Had a GUI that worked fine in the IDE+Standalone but didn’t react to anything in the webplayer. The issue seemed to appear if I was pressing a key (which in my case was necessary to fade in the GUI). Removing the “hold a key to fade in” function made it run in the webplayer again…

/P

ive had a few strange things with webplayer, including key presses, when i KNOW the webplayer has focus (unless my mouse is broken or im insane)

No there was no web player update recently. Did you guys notice when these issues started? Maybe could do a web player that reproduces the issues?

A couple things I have noticed – sometimes it seems like the occassional key press (captured with Input.GetKeyDown()) misses a key. It could be my imagination or my keyboard, but Unity is the only app that I have ever noticed it in. (And I have never been able to consistently reproduce the behavior – it just seems random.) Again, though, it might just be my fingers getting old or something.

On an old PPC iMac 10.4.9, Firefox 2.0.0.3 is caching web player games and not letting go. Only a complete flush of the cache will cause it to reload the game. I don’t know if this is normal or not, but all other browsers/platforms seem to reload the game content fine when the page is manually reloaded. (Other problems on that platform include initial stutter in the web player, no glow, no audio pitch shift, and relative audio volumes seem off. It’s a pretty old machine, though, so none of these are really surprising given the age of the hardware.)

This sometimes happens wit flash has well.

@Aras
When I first saw unity on my pc i tried the web player of the race car demo, and i had to repeadtly press forwards to go, otherwise it would start and if i held key down it would stop.

A week ago I also had the same effect playing yoggy’s mega pixel in web player. It stutters key movement for the first ~30 seconds, i thought this might be part of the game but ive played that level before where it works fine.

You may assume this was under opera 9

Edit:
Just tried mega pixel again-
First time it said something after loading “unity player failed to load” … ? (i think) i refresh and it was fine then
tried going into fullscreen and the player flickers back and forth between window and fullscreen under opera 9.

and right now while im trying to edit this post, theres a copy of the unity draw screen thats messing with opera so i cant see my text changing! (switched tabs so you can see the effect)

We are not officially supporting Opera on OS X.

do you plan to?

I got similar issues using Firefox a short while ago (maybe 3 weeks ago?). If I recall correctly, it was before 10.4.9 and shortly after we upgraded to 1.6.1. It seemed to happen only with the bigger web player projects, and at times would lock up Firefox and at others it would leave pieces of different pages on the screen. I haven’t seen this recently nor have I tested for it recently.

I wonder why it’s hard to get a statement like this when you’re asking for…

My problems do show up on OSX 10.4.9 and Safari, also with smaller projects.

For getting to know which browsers are supported?

By the way: I’ve already provided examples to Aras. Do you experience the same with the links i’ve sent you?

Im concerned about the non-support of a (main stream)browser,
Does OTEE expect the web player to become a mainsteam - at least amongst gamer communities?

A large part of any web designer/developer’s job making sure the website displays as near possible on as many different configurations as possible.

I am aware that commercial websites will only support ie, and maybe firefox, and will tell people that the website may have flaws under certain brwosers - it break the end-user experience, which is annoying enough when your trying to do internet banking and you have to change user agents just so the web page lets you see your money!

It is even more important in a gaming experience, because it is non-essential, and a game is an experience in a box. The end user can and will give up quickly, and if does get it working will be somewhat agitated at the start of the game.

I have been really excited about the prospect of being able to use the unity web player, and every flash developer i have demonstrated unity too has, how can i say… creamed their pants.

However, you only need a handful of people having their web browsers crash or freeze displaying weird pixels on the screens for them to become frustrated and angry. These disgruntled individuals will proceed and tell everyone they know not to download the unity web player because it messed with their machines, which will lead to uninstallation.

This may seem insignificant to some but a state-wide fire starts with a spark.

The unity web player is still just a baby, the slightest knock can stunt its growth and change its future forever.

Please minimize this threat.

What i miss from otee regarding a professional webplayer support is:

a) Accessible information about which browsers in which versions under which os are official supported, which ones are said to be running without beeing officially supported and which ones aren’t working. Clients do ask this questions!

b) Tweaking tips for each browser if available - see Firefox.

c) A more mature webplayer feeling.

Till today i still feel safer on Safari when watching unity-web-content than on any other browser. I’ve just experienced too much quirks on the pc side also the last times i’ve watched content there. Especially notebooks are always good for surprises here.

d) I miss a version number of the installed plugin i can lookup.

My actual information is that unity should run on Safari, Camino, Internet Explorer and Firefox whilst i have no idea which versions are supported and which os are meant.

I would like all those points as well, version number shouldnt be too much of an issue as the plugin auto-updates, no?

And how do you know that auto update worked properly when investiagting problems with a client for instance? How do you know that he really is using the latest version? You simply don’t know without a version number.

your right you dont, but the web player handles loading no? im assuming it checks then and factors any updates to the webplayer in the loading, otherwise theres no much point in the webplayer handling the loading.

Still something can go wrong and if so you can’t identify this properly.
