WebPlayer/Standalone crashes on PC but not on Mac

Hi,

I'm currently developing a small 2d game with Unity. I'm developing entirely on my Macbook Pro, which has been working great. I just tried the web deployment, uploaded to my web server, and it works flawlessly on my Mac, but crashes on my Windows 7 PC.

It crashes in IE 8, FF 3.6, and Chrome 8 with 100% reproducibility, sometimes seemingly rendering a single frame after the loading bar and sometimes just going white after the loading bar, with the resulting "send error report" dialog appearing (which I've sent).

[EDIT] I've discovered the reason for this crash -- detailed below in my answer. Thanks again.

While this could be caused by any number of things, you've stated two key factors here. It's 100% reproducible, and it happens right on startup. This means you can use elimination to try and figure out what's really the issue. Start by either taking things out of the build or giving another look to everything that you're doing at startup time. It may not necessarily be a thing happening on startup directly, but it's a high likelihood.

Pay attention to any compile-time warnings you may be ignoring (or suppressing), you can even start manually logging everything you're doing to a file, or using PlayerPrefs, this might give you an idea of how far you're getting in initialization and what is causing this.

Lastly, if you find something that isn't your own 'oopsie' but seems like a bug, send them a detailed bug report on it, rather than just the crash report.

I appreciate your help guys -- I got to the bottom of it.

This wasn't an issue with the web player, rather an issue with the PC implementation of OnWillRenderObject. OnWillRenderObject will work just fine up until you have a certain amount of GameObjects in the scene, at which point it will crash gloriously on the PC but not on OSX. It will crash for any built binaries, whether executed in the web browser or as standalone.

It's not that I have a high number of objects with the OnWillRenderObject callback defined either -- if I remove said callback from ALL objects, the game runs without crashing. However, if I add OnWillRenderObject to a single object past the threshold, it crashes.

My guess is there's some internal array that's not initialized properly on the PC side when an object requests to be in that callback list, resulting in the access violation.

I'll submit a detailed bug report to Unity.

I use Chrome on Windows 7 a lot. During this time, I have learned that the Unity Web Player does not like Chrome very much. It frequently crashes Chrome, but works flawlessly on other browsers like Firefox. :(

Like Justin commented above, use another browser until the web player's compatibility issues with Chrome are fixed. You might also want to submit a bug report to Unity about this.
