Weird shadow blobs when lightmapping a scene

I’m trying to get shadows to look good when lightmapping but no matter what I try they always seem to turn out into these odd blobs. The light’s shadow settings (shadow radius, samples) doesn’t make any difference. Even turning off shadow casting on the lights produces these shadows. Are they being created by the bounces?

Any suggestions on how to make the shadows softer? not as dark?

Turn down the Ambient Occlusion.

That worked, thanks! Any suggestions on what range to keep the AO values at for an interior spaceship scene like the one in the screenshots? It will be viewed from around that angle and distance as well.

There’s no magic numbers, each scenario is different, you just need to adjust the parameters until you get something you like.
